Not saying that the current version is unstable and it's actually surprising at how many have jumped on the Xenforo band wagon....

Not really. vBulletin under Internet Brands didn't really treat their customers very well from the get go. It wasn't that people jumped into xenForo necessarily, but out of where they were coming from.

You could also mention Kim and Sherri from IPB as another example. Both of which seem to be leaving IPB for xenForo because they spend more time making upgrades to all their skins rather than actually making new ones.

Well Xenforo is very cheap compared to all the other forum softwares out there. It's the cheapest of them all I suppose.

Its kind of expensive, but only suits professional, promotional sites not gaming or entertainment purposes

I know I am bumping an old thread, but I had to throw my 2 cents in for what its worth. When purchasing anything, there are 4 ingredients in the price: Labor, Material, Overhead and Profit. When considering price, you also have to consider the ingredients. Xenforo now has thousands of customers (guestimate) so obviously the price point is worth it for most.
When I purchase something, I am considering the following:
Will I get support for the product I am purchasing?
Is the product right for my application?
Will the product perform the way I want it to?
Will the company be around for awhile to support me?

I have read in this thread somewhere about Kier flexing his muscles. That post is right on IMO. They are concentrating on the framework now, and then watch out! There is no telling what Xenforo will be a couple of years.

I never understand why people pay so much for forum softwares when you get the same for much cheaper or even free if you just try hard enough to modify it.

The facebook and twitter like social features:
    Notifications/Alerts
    Likes system
    status updates
twitter type member following system. etc

These are all default in xenforo.

I pay so I don't have to hack around on it. And if there is something wrong, I want to be able to submit a support ticket and have the issue resolved. If I have to hack it to get what I want out of it and it doesn't work I would have to yell at myself even more than I do now. :p

You can submit support tickets on free softwares just like you can on expensive softwares. I'm not talking about doing anything illegal here.

I think you meant forking open source forum softwares such as mybb or phpbb right? Which is perfectly legal.

Yeah, I meant hacking (modding) as in editing the source code. Nothing illegal of course. ;)

Not all of us have the capability to modify open source software to make it feel the same as paid software, I'm sure this is a huge part of the sales behind paid software. You also get superior support from paid software (or so has been the case for me when I ditched phpBB and went on to IPB and xF).

Same here, I never got good support from phpBB or MyBB, but on xenforo the whole community tries to help.

That's what I really like about IPB and xF, especially on xF. I remember I posted a thread about having difficulty with migrating my IPB forum to a new server and I was entertaining the idea of getting on xF to save myself some headaches. If it was vB I probably would have been bombarded with unpleasant responses but I actually got a lot of help.
