Well, if you are really hurting for space you could always use your big screen tv as a monitor. I have done that on occasion for certain projects, but I dont use dual monitors for things. I use dual computers. And I have gone even further than that at times. I have a switch so I can go back and forth between multiple computers and instead of using the monitor on the switch, I let every computer have its own monitor, so I can do multiple things much quicker.

Ya, my father in law uses a big flat screen TV for his monitor and it works great. I still prefer to twin monitors though. You can use one for work/projects and the other for misc stuff like emails, twitter and web site.

Dual monitor setup here. I use a 19" widescreen and a 17" crt.
I have the main monitor using FF, and the 17" uses IE7. I do this for cross browser checking while designing.

I'm always one the road, so the only PC I have is a old 2004 single-monitor box. I have a lot of laptops though, so instead of having dual monitors I just open up a couple whenever I need to see Photoshop and MSN at the same time.

Any Nvidia chip with 150 in the name is an onboard chip. Though my wife has a Nvidia 9150 GL in her HP and it has two DVI ports on the back of the PC even though its onboard video. Her computer was an off-the-shelf beast from Circuit City (sniflles) with - AMD Quad-Core, 8 GB RAM, 750 Megabyte HD all for $700 bucks. We set aside 2 GB of RAM for video processing and she can pull 60-80 FPS in DirectX 10 games.

So Wayne, is it possible (and if so - easy) to buy a new graphics card and replace the one I have?

Sure, you just install the new card into your PCI or PCI-Express slot, boot the computer up, go into the BIOS and disable the onboard graphics (should do it automatically really), go into Windows and install the drivers for the new card.

It's quite a neat setup, regardless of whether or not you're a graphic designer. If you ever get a chance, give it a try. ;)

I am surprised to see how many people use the dual-monitor setup. I want one. :(

Amazing! I didn't know it was this easy :D

I'm now on the lookout for a nice (and cheap) graphics card. :woohoo:

Dual? heck no..I use a triple setup...

24" widescreen flanked by 2x 20" angled slightly towards me.

I do a ton of technical writing and this allows me to to keep the main tool, Madcap Flare, in the center. To the left there are multiple browser windows open with stuff like multiple pages of the app I'm writing about, the bug listing and email. To the right is the screen cap and other graphics editing tools.

When I need more real estate the laptop gets fired up too...

what kind of ports are you using for this 3 way setup? I know my laptop can be used for a 3 way setup with the main screen, hdmi port and dvi but use it solely as a portable device.

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT x2 - Each has 2 DVI out, I could add a 4th if my desk had the space, and I've thought of it. Placing the 4th above the center one angled down some, but alas I'd rather spend the cash on my car.

    Motherboard is an
    ASUS M4N72-E SLI ready board.

I used to write manuals for the gaming industry so needed some heavy duty graphics capabilites. While these cards were pretty hot a few years back when new now they are run of the mill. I also don't game anywhere near as much since I got out of that ratrace.

I use to do alot of web design and coding and stuff, and so my pc has two monitors set up to help, i use to have my coding open on one screen and the page on the other.

About six months ago shortly before xmas i have used nothing but my laptop though and my main pc is handling all the dust! :D

I've never tried a dual monitor set up... I definitely don't have the desk space.
