And now, some quick history for those that actually think it will end:

A Brief History of the Apocalypse

Yeah, that site has the history of every prediction of the apocalypse so far, and note how none have came to fruition. Also note... people thought it was going to end back in about 2800 BC.

No. Utter bull if you ask me.

I don't think it's the end of the world in 2012, nor the end of humanity. I say they just ran out of time while making their calendar and it just ended on that date or whatever. Has nothing to do with us. Just what I believe.

My current theory, which may change in 2012 but no likely, it's the people that are frantic and fanatic about it that will bring it forth. The end of civilazition not the world. It will be the fear of it happening that will make it reality.

It's another way to control the mass media. Just like the millenium scare, the 09/09/09 scare, which by the way passed without even a blimp.

As for me I'll believe it when I see it. Preparations no. I enjoy life day by day. I have to much fun enjoying today with my girls than worry about tomorrow. To survive what they are saying I either need to build a mass underground self sustaining bunker or build my own space station.

For all that want to prepare for it, please feel free. I know the economy needs it for you to do your preparations.

Nothing like the masterminds of our civilization leading the cows to slaughter.

Have I missed something? I mean I know I had a high fever for a good number of days, but when did this concern about 2012 being the end of the world start? And what brought it on?

Hm, the whole fiasco has been going on for quite a while now. I've been hearing about it for at least a year.

Some attribute it to the Mayan calendar, some say it has to do with the lining up of planetary bodies in the universe on that certain date, etc. There are so many theories and predictions, it's overwhelming.

Your friends are probably sane and don't worry about such nonsensical things. :P

It's the movie - grossed $65 million opening weekend. :D Of course that's not the origin of the prophesy, but that's why everyone in America is going on about it right now. :p

Dan if your website is about all apocalyptic predictions and theories it should be busy. :D The real question is who will have the patience to moderate it? Given the clientele likely to frequent it. :) :spin: Apocalyptic prophesy must be one of the universal phenoms of all cultures, all have some wild stories of how it will all end.

Is the 2012 thing true? All I know is that I saw a Discovery channel show on it this weekend. Even the documentary was a special effects extravaganza (you can get it in HD.) I learned that if the world does end it doesn't matter because we will all be instantly dead from the energy release. No chance to fuss about it.

All I know is that I want to see the "2012" movie on the big screen, with stadium seating. :p

I wonder why we (ok, some) humans collectively worry about an impending apocalypse every few years. What is it about our makeup that makes us freak out like this?

I think it's usually about a personal gain. The ones that start it off, are websites, media, tv programs, and those that commercially gain. Thought he followers, and they would have followed the 09 'death' and then as that didn't turn out as they planned, they'll follow the 2012 'death', are the ones that keep the rubbish living.

If we were going to end in 2012, we really would know now, unlike the MOVIE (and it is just a movie, again, with great commercial interest - so money) suggests that they'd find out only months before it happens.

If we did have a comet coming at us, or the gravitational pull was weakening, or a solar flare was on the way to us, or something else drastic was happening, then we'd know about it well before it happened.

That said, solar flares, can sporadically 'light up' and can hit us in super speed, though we do have radars between us and the sun detecting this, and we do get them (checkout the magnetosphere and the "northern lights") but the magnetosphere protects us, and that is something we can measure if it's weakening. And it's part of the effect of global warming.

Mars may have had life, though billions of years before Earth had life, apparently. And if we did go live there (if we could) we'd have no protection as their atmosphere is 7% as strong as ours. And we'd have 7% protection we have.

We really are unique here. Pluto protects us from comets, we're the right distance away from our star (the sun), we have experienced the right number (hundreds) of knock-on effect 'happenings' over the billions of years. And although I think there could be a chance of more life billions of light-years away. Unfortunately, the fact is, if we set of now and had the equipment, the earth would die before we could get there. And the real fact is, we don't have the equipment yet, and probably never will

NASA has had less investment from both private and government investors than Sky have invested in their satellites to give us TV, for the last 10 years.

We're going to be alone, and will be alone, forever. And I don't think for a very long time, we'll die here of either natural causes or our own doing.

    I don't believe that BS.

Our politicians around the globe make far worse things occur than some questionable Maya theory.

This weekend I beileve it was on History or Discovery Channel or something that had a more....practical explanation of this phenomenon. Take that statement with a grain of salt of course, but I'll do my best to repeat what was said.

2012 just happens to line up with a cycle that occurs every 26,000 years or some other number. Sorry I can't remember. The Mayan Calendar is therefore tied to it, since it was derived basically from astronomy.

The idea is that the earth, planets, etc. are all rotating. If you recall from grade school, the axis of the earth is not straight up and down. You have that rotation plus the rotation about the sun.

The cycle is referring to a less technical term called wobbling. The analogy is a spinning top. The top spins until its speed decreases so much that gravity has more of an effect on its behavior. If there was a vacuum and no friction on the tops contact point of spinning, it would spin forever. So as we all know, that top will stop spinning, but it's precursor to stopping, aside from picking it up, is that it will wobble first. A dip here and there. I'm using layterms of course. :P

This wobble is surmised to occur with the earth for similar reasons. Apparently earth will be aligned w/ the sun which will be aligned w/ the Milky Way Galaxy. Wow, everytning fricken aligned...I guess so? Remember, earth is spinning itself, earth rotates about the sun (sun also spinning), our solar system is moving, our entire galaxy is spinning...yadda yadda yadda

So, if there is an ounce of truth to this wobble, it can invariably mean an end to something actually. Talk about climate change....the main ocean currents that drive weather patterns...effected when being jostled about.

    Ok done now...

Exactly. Politicians are the only ones who create problems, and then campaign against them.

Now that I think about it, I realize that what I just said has nothing to do with this thread. :P Sorry.

Wait, it's true. If Sarah Palin gets elected for president. McCain only lost because of Palin, otherwise he would have won.

I was getting more at... if both parties oppose deficits, why do we have deficits? If both are against high taxes and inflation then why the heck do we face high taxes and inflation?

    Ever seen: RightNation.US -> 545 vs. 300,000,000 ? ;)

Yeah, we really are getting off topic, and I apologize. We should stop. :)
