    Whoo hoo!

3ds Max, Maya, and Softimage (and a bunch of programs that I don't even know what they are) arrived today! :D

I now have 13 months to decide which one of them I'm going to buy the commercial version of. ;)

3d modeling and animation software. :)

My mom just bought the 13 month educational license for them in a package.

Based on these, I'll decide which program to buy the commercial version of.

Yes, I know what they are, I own both, legally.

I didn't realize you were talking about an educational license. If you want my personal advice, if you know how to use 3DS Max, I would recommend going forth an buying Maya.

    Which versions do you have?

There have been a TON of improvements in Max since version 6, which I also have the educational license for, but 2010 is blowing me away, while still remaining familiar to me.

What are the true benefits of Maya 2010? Both are the same price now ($3500 or $4000 with a subscription).

I've just been messing with Max tonite, but I'll play with Maya tomorrow.

To be honest, it's been years and years since I'd heard anything of Softimage, and then it was considered THE best. Autodesk owns all three now. :)

I just opened Maya and did a couple of tests. It's WAY more complicated interface, but I have a feeling you're right. ;)

    I realized something...

    [rant]

Just to make it absolutely clear, I abhor software piracy. I will not use pirated software (programs, movies, music, etc...), and I follow license terms (as with these programs, I'm using them for learning purposes only, and I will not use them commercially until I have the appropriate license).

I know a lot of people think it's "unfair" that they can not use the best programs and movies, etc., and they feel that everything should be open-source. That does not give the people the right to download illegal copies of software. It's stealing.

Just because you cannot afford that Mercedes over there does not give you the right to take it for yourself.

    Same with software.

Companies charge for software NEED to charge for software, or they would not survive as companies. Individuals who charge for programming, graphics, and other work charge what they charge in order to eat and have a roof over their heads.

You wouldn't work for McDonald's for free, would you? Or most any other company. You need to eat.

People who create software and graphics, etc., cannot do everything for free, as much as some people would like them to.

    [/rant]

Chani, I got them months apart from each other. In late 2007 and early 2008.
