Getting those who register to be regular contributors. As we all know forums can be addicting. So get them hooked. Look for members with low post counts and try to engage them so they will participate. Give them the enjoyable experience. It is tough, but reaps huge rewards.

For our forum, it has been trolls. We work with survivors of relationship abuse, so unfortunately we also tend to attract some really nasty people. Keeping the forum safe has become a full time job between our eight admins - we all often need to take time off to save our sanity. I'm on a little vacation now, which is how I ended up here :)

I would personally say consistency is and always will be the hardest part for any of my projects. Constant activity makes forums looks great and entices people in but keeping the people there daily making as many posts as the day before so that there is enough for people to discuss has always been a harder thing for me.

You should have a message that displays to users under 20 posts and it tells them to post and if they don't, their account will be deleted in 1-4 days.

The hardest part about running forums for me is that I never want to stop, lol. I always want to make another forum and at times, I overwhelm myself. Lately though, I have been letting quite a few of them go to focus on my "bigger" communities. However, I have been really getting into blogging as well as of lately.
