And that is the other reason I did not ask the question. I learned a long long time ago that by focusing on the positive gets me much farther that being negative, which is the other reason I did not ask the question.

Eventually the reasons will surface for the strange support schedule.

    And the answer:

    Kevin Sours:
We won't do it prior to the upgrade, but there are plans to disable old products as part of the upgrade to avoid breaking the board. We don't plan to clean up any datamodel changes make by the mods.

Which is a bit disappointing I would think.

I'm really wondering what the plan is for the .org. It hasn't been mentioned once in this whole mess. I would guess a majority of mods are not going to be updated in the first place due to lack motivation and/or dissatisfaction with vBulletin among the developers Without a public beta everyone with a modded board is going to have to wait for the mods that are going to be updated to be updated.

It seems to me like the .org is being positioned to become a bastardized step child of vB Solutions. I don't know why I feel that way but it just feels that way to me.

Big Dan brings up a good point. Apologies if it strays this topic and a Mod can Copy it out for a new thread, but I don't know the answer to this question:

Is vborg owned and run by .com? Or is it only linked via the licensing authorization. I honestly do not know after all this time. If they are owned, then is it fair to assume that vborg is along for the ride?

A quick WHOIS shows both the .com and .org are hidden via domainsbyproxy.com group. Both share the same nameservers of NS1, NS2 and NS3.JELSOFT.COM

MjrNuT, The direction of vb.org would be certainly be an interesting topic to speculate on.

I tried bringing vborg up yesterday on vb.com, at least in regards to upgrading it.

If that site could have it's database cleaned, purged, and updated. Then upgraded to a functional v4, even if it did not go live, that would help many sites that faced the same challenges vborg faces.

As far as the rest of it, yes it may have less focus in the future unless things change.

It is part of .com........when steve took my privelages away at .com, he also took my privelages at .org as well. I believe the staff at vb.com are paid though, and those at vb.org are volunteers.....

I asked about vb.org and at least having provisions for people who don't upgrade to 4 to have access to the 3.x mods after their license expires, so far I haven't gotten an answer. Gotta love moderated chat where questions can be cherry picked.

Due to the way it's being ran I have no clue if my question is up in the queue or has been passed over. I asked under 'Big Dan' I gotta go, someone let me know if they answer please.

    Yo, see my post #25?

There might be a granular level of ownership that I'm implying.

@gnatster -- thank you, which only tells us the domain name is controlled by 1 entity, nothing more.

My comments were with regards to helping people that may have many modifications from previous modifications.

If they want to sell more software they should make it as painless and easy to upgrade as possible. The more work they need to do the more likely they will use a different software.

Well that was uneventful, but we figured it would be.

Did we really learn anything new from this or was it just a PR exercise?

Well I wound up seeing the last bit of questions and answers.. No answer to my question. What a joke.

@gnaster: It was nothing more than an exercise in PR making their customers feel like they're input was wanted.

I found out how Kevin was thinking, at least more than I did. And could see how well/not well everyone was in sync.

I did feel better about vb's future an an hour ago though.

Knowing the org it will be left to it's own devices and plod along in it's natural stagnated stage. However, the day when the majority of talented coders and other resource providers stop developing due to the fiasco then the site is/will become a graveyard.

I've always said this and my mind will unlikely change on this. You take away the coders scripts graphics designers and vbulletin.org is nothing. It's the members that make and will eventually break vbulletin.org

From past experience with .org, i would say as long as coders are writting hacks for say, 3.8, the hacks will still be available. Most levels of vbulletin are still receiving hacks at .org.......Not sure if that makes any sense. Most of the hacks there are free (most), so i would think .com will allow that site to exist for a while longer......

In fairness...this was their first attempt as such an event. We all know that usually the first time is the worst and we learn from the experience. I'm curious to see if the next one even goes off and if so will it be better.

I felt they were disjointed and were not on point with the same message. I also think they picked questions that allowed for them to hit singles again and again avoiding those that could have caused any controversy.

Saturday is the middle of the month and they did state the beta is on time and will be ready for the middle of the month. Lets see if they jump that hurdle and get us beta on time.

As someone that has a lot of eggs in the vB basket I'm not thrilled, but that foreboding sense of doom that washed over me last week is not as deep...

The scuttlebutt is for a Friday release.

This ought to be really good being Friday is the 13th. I can just see the nattering nabobs of negativity now having a field day with this.

    vB Beta haunted with issues...

    and so forth.
