We've got the rep system tied in with the post thanks hack, 1 point per thanks. The rep system is still active but not too many members use and those that do generally don't abuse it. We also have Paul M's extended reputation display hack so those with lots of rep have 'general's stars' pretty cool if I don't say so myself.

The amount of use it gets also depends on what you name it.

In all seriousness, people get way too attached to their scores, and one committed person can ruin a lot of people's days. Really WTF for me but I prefer MyBB's system - you can only give, and you can only give so much to one person.

I can actually see my own helpful posts. I don't think it is adding to our rep, though.

Odd... I haven't run across any of my "helpful" posts.

I think I am mistaken, then. It doesn't show the buttons on your own posts because it doesn't want you to be giving yourself rep. But I think it forgets to display it once someone else has rated the post.

It's a bit strange... and it is most definitely not adding to our reputation here.

i have it on one of my forums, and it seems to be working well, and another has a mod similar to the one on this one, but this was only added last week so hasnt had much use.

one of the forums i used to be on had a lot of people abusing the system, repeatedly giving negative reputation to members they didnt like, for no reason, and giving loads to their friends.

i guess it just depends on what sort of members you have

Totally open to abuse. I've seen it cause far more trouble than it is worth. It encourages cliques to engage in a constant series of circle jerks and make your ordinary poster feel like an unwanted outsider. A good compromise is the thanks button. There is no negativity to make people feel excluded and you can use it to select a post of the day which can be a very interesting source of friendly rivalry.

    My 2c.
