I really don't enjoy having family members as staff members.

It tends to mess things up - you favorite them more than you favorite other staff members, etc.

That, and the fact that they will sometimes bring personal stories to the forum that really should not be shared with the general public.

    Indeed...

And to add on, they'll think people under them are inferior and they can constantly think they won't get into trouble because they know the administrator.

And if they do something and you need to fire them then it can get very ugly in real life. Same goes for real friends.

Not really - how mad can you get over being demoted from a staff team?

You hit the nail right on top of its shiny head.

Interestingly enough, having to remove friends from the staff team has never had an effect on my personal life - forgive and forget.

Yes but not always friends are happy about it. I guess if they get really mad they are not so good friends but still.

    Forgive and forget, pssht.

I tell my friends, from the get-go, if something happens online, you keep it online, do not bring anything regarding the site into the real world.

Well seeing as a majority of my friends have absolutely no idea as to what I do on the web, it's only a select few that have actually been both hired and demoted by me. Were they a bit aggravated at first? Maybe... but it didn't show - it's not a personal attack against them.

I once made a 16 year old a "junior moderator" and put him in charge of the children's subforum.

How did that end up working out? Is he still in this position currently?

Yeah, it worked out pretty well; he's still at it and he's a few years older now.

There are always those individuals that are mature and intelligent - as they are a rarity, it's crucial to "scoop em' up" when you can.

I think it's neat that he's had the position for so long, having started at a younger age. I'm sure it makes him proud.

I don't think people under 13 should be admin/mods because they are just to young.

Even if they show signs of great maturity and capability?

My youngest admin is 13. He was earning money by running proxy networks when he was 11. He then started a company selling outsourced writing services. Now he's building content sites for longer-term profits.

My second youngest admin is 15. He runs a software development company, an importing company, and several profitable affiliate web sites.

My third youngest admin is older than the two of them put together -- and I'm older than he is.

Maturity and age don't seem to be very connected.

Wow, that is remarkable, Will. You certainly are correct when you say that maturity and age are not always connected.
