    {1} is vBulletins way of parsing your forum name. When you go to edit langauges/phrases you'll always see numbers in curly brackets like {1}, {2} etc.

    These are dynamic and pull data directly from the database depending on the phrase.

    So I am allowed to remove the "powered by vBulletin" text which comes after my forum name without purchasing the branding free option first?

    AFAIK, yes. I've never heard them say anything different.
    The branding free option is for the copyright text @ the bottom of the page, or this text:

    Thank you!

    I asked about copyright once before when I wanted to remove the version number of my vBulletin installation from the footer. I was glad to hear back from the moderator I asked this of at vBulletin.com that I may.

    Search in your phrases for powered_by_vbulletin and look for:

    Code:
    Powered by vBulletin&reg; Version {1}<br />Copyright &copy;2000 - {2}, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
    Remove:

    Code:
     Version {1}
    :)
