Who cares about looks, its all about performance and maintainability over the long run when you're dropping $1200+ for any computer system it needs to be able to get upgraded at a lower cost over the next 3-4 years, or its a bad investment to me.

Oh, BTW how exactly do you do hardware upgrades on that there iMac?

All I can say is Virus. You have to spend an additional $60+ a year on decent virus protection for your PC. Also, you pay for the operating system and an easy warranty service where by both the computer and OS are warrantied by Apple.

Put the computer screen flat on the table and detach the bottom grill. Then it's easy to upgrade the RAM etc.

Nope, I spend $0 a year on virus protection, Never click links I dont already know Never visit sites I don't know. But thats doesn't have anything to do with the question I posed.

How can you upgrade your video card, or processor after say 3 years of using it? By then the technology will be far outdated and more advanced than what was available to be bought previously, but why upgrade an entire system when maybe on certain aspects need it. Surely the monitor part of it will still be good, along with the case and hopefully hard drive. RAM speeds seem to have hit a stagnate growing point for the consumer market here lately so perhaps those will last as well.

I'm not a apple hater or a strictly PC guy (after all I did just buy a 17 macbook pro for shits and giggles). But most of the arguments for/against on or the other are insane and shouldn't ever be brought up.

It's a matter of personal preference. It's as simple as that. ;)

No, you don't have to spend $60+/yr for decent virus protection. AVG and Avast! do wonders for protection. And don't give that bullshit cry about how Macs are perfectly invulnerable. Hackers know that Macs hold a smaller share than Windows, so it's a waste of time to focus all of their energy on it, but there are indeed viruses for the Macs.

You bring up a good point. While it may be true that Macs are very long-lasting and durable, you couldn't do what I do with my PC gaming machine, and, oh I dunno, pay $30 for 4GB of RAM on sale at my local Microcenter. Hmm, Windows 7 is coming out soon. If my computer wasn't good enough, I'd just buy up to a few hundred dollars worth of parts that I'd need to upgrade, instead of shelling out $1,500 for an entirely new machine.

Ultimately, it comes down to that. Some people have the money. Some people like the looks. But you can't truly say that one is definitively better than the other.

For instance, I love using Macs for multimedia editing, I think they're much more perfect for that than most Windows machines.

Considering the fact that the way something looks is more of an opinion than anything.... :shifty:

God no! WHY would I want to use Apple's garbage anywhere I don't have to?
I've used firefox since before it was firefox (I forget what it was before they changed the name), on Linux and Windows OS'es, and it does just what I need it to.

I agree. I used to use Macintoshes. I prefer not to anymore because they no longer fulfill my needs as a professional, developer, gamer, or as a general user. I even like the more square buttons in Windows over the ovals in OSX.

Not only that but I can network my entire house with what it costs for one Mac Pro with similar components as my current HP computer. I don't care what the case looks like because it sits in a cabinet in my desk. I only care about what it can do. I like being able to walk into Gamestop and purchasing any game on the shelf knowing that I can take it home, slide it into my Blu-Ray player and run it on my computer. Last I checked, Apple didn't even offer Blu-ray in their computers. Nor can it play most games without additional emulation software. I also like the freedom of choice that Apple doesn't provide.

I even prefer black components and blue LEDs over silver components with red and green LEDs. Though honestly I don't know what color LEDs current Macs offer. They aren't sold in my area and the nearest Apple store is 60 miles away. Local Best Buy stopped carrying them about 2 years ago when they expanded their PC selection.

Anyway, I am sorry about derailing the thread. I only posted my macintosh experience because people always say I don't like Safari on Windows because I don't have experience with Macintoshes.
