I do use Google Analytics to track my traffic sources. And yeah! You won't even need more than a day to see your traffic sources.
As far as i see, bookmarking sites haven't brought any traffic to my site.

I never use those, and never will. You can try twitter, it does help.

I don't think so at all. As soon as something exciting happens in the world, I might try EzineArticles.

There are many ways to advertise. The best and free way to advertise is through your signature on other forums. You are welcome to add your website in your signature and you can showcase it in here. (You need 10 posts first)

I like to use promotion forums. Or i'll find forums and blogs that have topics that I am interested in and post or add comments that are meaningful to the discussions. Sometimes I'm able to build a good rapport with the admins or other members and we view each others sites and add content.

I am currently using Facebook and Twitter but the problem I am finding is that people are liking the facebook page but not registering for the forum

I agree that promoting your forums through signatures is a great way to advertise it. Its easy and and it can reel in a lot of active members which are interested in the same niche as your forum. You just need to create a forum presence to get members to click your signature because if you just keep on posting one liners then no one would bother to click that signature of yours in a long shot.

I don't really advertise anywhere, my site was built up by word of mouth.

Yes we do have two twitter feeds (One for news updates and the other which posts to Twitter everytime a new thread is posted to my site.) But thats about it.

I have never paid for advertising, traffic or fake members. Everything was done the old fashioned way... I earned it. :)

I like to promote my forums on other forums. Because they've got a webmasters design section I like to showcase my sites design that I've made, and people just access them and eventually just register and stay.

I promote with Facebook, especially with the fan pages. I find a fan page that pertains to the topic of my forum and post a link there, telling the members that they can chat all about the topic and share their stories on the site. Just be careful when you are doing it. Don't go overboard, or people will simply think you are spamming.

I've gone on a lot of forum promotion/admin forums and stuck a link in my signature, as well as posted a thread where allowed. Unfortunately for me this hasn't generated much if any traffic at all, and maybe one or two users overall. A lot of my forum members are either friends on Facebook, a handful of friends-of-friends, a small group of people on another forum I used to frequent, and about another handful from a graphics site my girlfriend frequents.

We got off to a good start due to having quite a few friends interested, but in terms of completely new people/people we don't know, we're not having much luck.
