I was thinking the same: You can tell whether a new member is a legit one or not by the first post. :)

Thanks for taking it into consideration!

We have recaptcha enabled, e-mail verification, and all posts in our Introductions forum (which gets the most spam) are moderated.

On my one site which got hit really hard with spam, all new registrations are moderated, and one of the fields that is required at registration is to explain their experience with the site's topic. Since I implemented this method, there have virtually no spam registrations. :D

    I see, Dave.

I wonder why your Introductions forum is spammed rather than your general or significant [to your forum's niche] forums aren't.

    Odd..

I'm not sure, but I noticed this was a common pattern amongst the sites of mine that got spammed. The only thing I could think of would be the link to it in the welcome PM.

I'm actually beginning to think that fighting spam is an ongoing - and losing - battle, but one which, of course, must be fought.

I'd have to agree. Fighting it is one of the only things that will stress me out.

I've been using recaptcha enabled, e-mail verification and the Countymod hack and spam has been quite easy to deal with. Granted the forum is just over a month old I'm sure spam is going to increase. We are also very vigilante in watching all new members for a few posts to get a feel for them.

I made a truce with the spammers, I gave them Nick's forum site if they leave mine alone

 There's never spam on my forum. The first post must be approved, so even if there was, it won't disrupt my members or the flow of the community. :D

reCAPTCHA, first question, filter sets that would place the post into a moderation queue.

reCaptcha, Advanced image captcha, email verification, and a regex match question. Haven't gotten a bot since I installed it. :)

    ...or a registration.

StopForumSpam integration on registration on all forums - it's available for SMF, vB, phpBB, MyBB, WordPress, and of course StopForumSpam itself runs PunBB. Hell I'm even removing captchas >_>

That leaves IPB, Vanilla and Drupal...

I am surprised it does not yet work with IP.Board.
