I prefer to do the HTML page validation; you upload one file that no one has to ever see and avoid putting an extra line in your page output. (Over time that can add up.)

I prefer this method as well.

You are off to a great start. Getting to the top is something to strive for. Just continue to get your backlink out there. Try to focus on relevant sites; perhaps join some general sports forums, or Florida football forums and put the link in your signature there. The more, the merrier (generally speaking).

You also need fresh and unique content that can't be found elsewhere. Since my niche is so uncompetitive, I hold the #2 position for my keyword, but it didn't happen magically. You need content and backlinks - and often (fresh).

Also, do you submit your sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools? This can really be beneficial to you. WordPress has an add-on that will automatically maintain a sitemap.

If it's an HTML sitemap it isn't going to do you all that much good. Check your WordPress plugins and see if any are generating an XML sitemap for your blog. If so, make sure you submit it to Google Webmaster Tools.

btw You have a mistake in your "What Clarity" story: "I don't think many fans understand just how this will change there swamp experience" should be their.
