Sorry, but banning cell phone use is just wrong. Well, maybe it's right for the newer drivers, but not for the older drivers who have more experience driving. Yes, I go 60+ down the highway. Yes, I talk on a cell phone most of the time. Yes, I eat while driving. Yes, I have my music blaring as loud as I can get it (thanks to dual 1200W amps and kick ass speakers). I've been pulled, what, like once and didn't even get a ticket. -knock on wood-

If you know how to drive then not banning cell phone use shouldn't be a problem. It's the idiots that DON'T know how to drive that makes it like that for all the others. I consider myself a good driver no matter how fast I go. And again, I suck at defending things and what not, so you probably won't get what I'm saying. For that, I blame my AS.

EDIT: I'll weld a chainsaw while talking on a cell phone. Hold on, let me get my headset so my hands are free.

It has nothing to do with how good of a driver you are. Even the most expert drivers shouldn't talk on their cell phones or succumb to other forms of distraction while driving.

One tiny mistake while driving can lead to a lifetime of suffering (either for yourself or for others).

I'm glad I'm not on the road near you; too bad there are others like you though who put myself and every other driver at risk. :frown:

That's plain silly. If you were the only driver on the road, then it wouldn't matter. But since there are other drivers all around you, your driving skill has no effect on the other drivers and how they react. You must always be proactive and not reactive when driving; avoid things before they even become a threat.

I´m annoyed by slow drivers too. That is a daily experience and bores me much more in the morning, when I´m excited to arrive at work in time.

We have a new tunnel in Munich. It should serve for an easier flow of traffic. Interestingly there are different experiences - an older tunnel within the same town-beltway was susceptible for high-speed-driving above the limit. But this new tunnel obviously makes all people shy - they are driving up to 10 kilometers below the limit. It´s a weird herd instinct, I guess.

My best buddies are those people, who are slowing down 30 meters in front of a green traffic light, forcing me to think angrily about a foreseeable, but avoidable stop, when the light turns to yellow and red. They seem to have an instinct for adjusting their speed to the rhythm of the traffic lights.

Another personal experience-value: if you see an old Mercedes with a small male driver inside, who wears an old-fashioned hat, the utmost trouble is pre-programmed.

Cell phones while driving up here are a big no-no. Also loud music. Both of these can earn you a quick ticket.

I see where you're coming from. But if you were to actually see me driving you wouldn't take a second guess that I'm better than most others on the road. I've had multiple people come up to me and say I'm one of the best drivers they know, but that I do tend to speed alot. And no, these aren't coming from my parents lol. From other people that barely know me.

And actually, I do rarely talk on my cell phone, not like I have any other friends to call on it. I only use it for when I need to pickup someone or run an errand for someone, which is rare lol. Now, I am bad for blaring my music, but to me, that has nothing to do with how good or bad you drive. It's just entertainment. You won't see me dancing around, singing, etc in the car though.

Ahh..a subject near and dear to me.

Driving Instruction in the US is horrible and getting worse.

Everyone that is a teen or has a teen needs to register and attend the Street Survival School.

I regularly attend track days where one can take a car on a closed course and drive it like it was intended. No traffic, no cross streets and lots of a run off area. I've also been an instructor and always found that those that arrived and said "I'm a great driver" are those that are the worst. They have no idea of car control, situational awareness and contain an ego the helmet cannot contain. Those are also the people with high HP cars that get lapped by MINIs. Funny to see the look on a Viper drivers face when passed by a Miata.

99% of the drivers on US roads have terrible skills and no idea of how to make the car move around as needed. So many crashes could be avoided with some proper training.

I have to agree with Nick here it's not about being a good or bad driver, it's about being a distracted driver. Driving requires all of our concentration even if your the best driver in the world you still have idiots who cut you off. If your yammering away on your cell phone you will not react as quickly to someone jumping in your lane, pulling out of a parking space, etc as someone who is just watching the road.

FWIW, I don't even agree with the hands free rule. Who cares if you have both hands on the wheel? I've always driven with 1 hand. It's about having your mind on the task at hand, driving!

One of my favorite subjects...bashing idiot drivers.

We got this intersection beside a main loop here in town. When people exit the loop there is a 1/4 mile merging lane but everyone believes they have to merge ASAP. It can be scary especially during rush hour. Anyhow, earlier this week some guy started merging into my lane immediately after exiting the loop. I didn't have enough time to stop or hook the horn, all I could do is swerve or get hit. So I swerved and ended up grazing a truck in the other lane  Now to be far the guy was honest and pulled over. He got a ticket for some weird wrong turn and gave me and the other driver his insurance info. That was my first wreck in 17yrs of driving.
