I'm sure the occasional serious on-topic discussion goes on in the chat room outside of the weekly scheduled chat, but mostly I see it as a way for members to do their socializing and nonsense messages without disturbing others.

Does seem like a plausible reason.

I have flashchat and it really hasn't been used. I am probably going to ditch it when I make some changes after vB 4.0 comes out.

Yeah, I have FlashChat installed on the Linnie Forum with a "chit-chat" room and a "bird-talk" room, and I don't think it has been used a single time. I'm glad it was only $5.

    Same experience with FlashChat here.
As for shoutboxes - I have created two forums with shoutboxes included from the start. And it was a help. What may play a role this thoug:
In both occasions the forum was made for a group of people that knew each other through another forum and wanted their own. So they took a bunch of users "with them". So there was a small core-community from the start.

Not sure if the shoutboxes would have worked that well on a really brand new forum.
