Though, I agree with most people about it being bad they charge so much for addons. It does have one pro side to it. It forces those that are capable of making the plugins to make their own thus expanding the plugin releases, if those people share. When I first started vbulletin I wanted a simple mod that someone was selling for 50 bux and I thought it was outrageous. So, I learned how to do it myself. I guess it just depends on your perception.

If in your perception the value of the product is not the money / investment but you still want it then just consider to have it developed for you. If the expense of having it coded for you is too much, then you can try to pool together with a few people and have it coded (if you find a coder that is willing to go along with that)
You would need to invest time and energy as well to make sure the developer understands your needs well, and when delivered do your own Q&A.
I would guess that most people would have much milder ideas about software price after such projects.

This what I would rather have. I would rather Xenforo and vBulletin have 30 day free demos and after if you like it you have a monthly cost that includes your downloads and your license. That way if you don't want either of them you can do away with them.

The mods spend their time and effort on the project just like we spend on our projects so why shouldn't they charge what they want? Nobody is forcing anyone to pay them and they usually provide instructions on how to do it yourself. Don't hire them if you think it's too expensive.
