Got a very unexpected surprise this morning drop through the letter-box. A cheque from the tax man for: £1,266.37. :speechless:

I cannot believe it, very unexpected and had no idea it was due my way! Didn't even apply for a tax refund.

That never happens here in the States. They keep taking and taking, but, never rarely give anything back.

It usually only happens around April time anyway, well just after. The start of new tax year and all. So it was a real surprise out the blue, more so because I never even applied for a tax re-bait. But saying that, my mate who run his own business has just had a tax windfall this same week as well.

So do you not have a system there where you can apply for a tax refund, see if you've over-paid, if lets say your tax code changed or was put on emergency tax code for a while paying more than you should have. Because tax paid is usually based on you working that income for 12 months, so if you got laid off from work for example for a while, then went back into work later. Really you should be due a tax refund come the end of the year.
