Now we have vbulletin 4 and I wonder if there will ever be a vbulletin 5 which we can buy. Or will vbulletin 5 only be available to IBs internal use? I can't help but have to ask me this question. What do you think?

I personally think there will be, and it'll be sooner out than expected due to Internet Brands wanting that money. For them, who cares if there are bugs, when they can make another $200+ per major software release?

What makes you think IB will develop vBulletin 5 just for their own use? By your way of thinking they don't intend on selling any more new versions to customers which really would negate the need to make new versions.

Stream, IB bought vbulletin as a forum software for their own forums. Therefore I believe IB will use vbulletin as a core software for their own forums in the feature. I am asking here the question if the feature versions will be publicly available for us customers of if IB maybe decides to let the next version of vbulletin - vbulletin 5 - be a private one.

I very much doubt they would have bought Jelsoft just to make vBulletin private for their own use.

If that was true why would they have released version 4? They would have kept that for their own use and not sold it to customers.

So internet brands will spend all of that time and money making a product they will not sale?

I look for vbulletin 5 to be released somewhere around the end of 2010.

I'd be surprised if they have 4 finished by the end of 2010 let alone 5.

End of 2010 sounds about right if not sooner. Buggy or not it will be released as soon as Bob Brisco wants to line his pockets again.

I shudder to think what vB5 is going to cost. If it's $175 again, few people are going to keep up with the software.

It will be interesting to see how that works. Anything may be possible.

I'm with the Q42010 release. Remember that major versions releases and new customers are the only sources of revenue for vB now (no more renewal income). The longer they go between major releases the less money is generated. vB4 showed that feature set, bug count and QA have little bearing on their releases.

You already know how it will work. There is no more upgrade fees. When vb5 is released you'll have to pay full price again. That has been stated many times.

I know that much. But it is possible there may be other things introduced, and of course the price is not yet set.

If someone buys vb(3,4,5) they can run a small forum that generates little revenue, or a huge forum with large revenue. And some of those forums compete with IBs sites.

I have no idea what they may try to do with v5 and newer versions.

Not yet set though. They may (unlikely) change their mind and charge a lesser fee, or give discounts to license holders with a rushed one week or so discount period (reminds you of anything?), or triple the price of a license and make everyone pay in full, or even halve the price of a license and everyone gets a discount.

Here is most likely what you'll read on vbulletin.com sometime around the October or November.

A little information about our new version of vbulletin , vbulletin 5. We are going to add a boatload of features, but, the tradeoff is we will get rid of the cms which has been bug riddled and resource heavy since it was created and the blog. If you purchased the suite that included the cms and blog we will offer you a one time discount to the new uber cool feature unlimited version of vb 5 at the price of $200. Be aware this is a time limited offer only available for 2 weeks. You'll then be able to download vbulletin 5 ultimate content system as soon as we release it. The full price after this one time offer for the new vbulletin 5 ultimate content system, which will take your site to a new level with integrated speech to text, which may or may not work, integrated tweet system, which should use less than 200 queries, image hosting which is like the albums feature on steroids just to name a few of the new features we will be adding, will be a low $385. So make sure you take advantage of this one time offer. Even though you have never seen it or had a chance to use it we can guarantee that it will blow you away so make sure to take advantage of this presale offer now.
