Did I make a mistake in ordering it, or is it pretty good?

Also I don't have a phone jack in, or near the room one of the boxes will be getting installed in, does this matter or will they install on in there?

I have had DirecTV for over almost 10 years now and am very happy.

Newer DirecTV boxes can download schedules via a network connection so you shouldn't need a phone line but you'll probably need a USB adaptor to connect to the network. The only thing you need a phone line for is to order pay-per-view but that is due to a firmware issue they may have fixed by now.

Damn, I was hoping they needed a phone line up in that room and would install it so I can move my PC and DSL modem up there.

Guess, I'll do it the old fashioned way, and run a 150ft long phone line all thru my apartment :D

I have had DirecTV for 4 months, and HATE it. Every single time it rains, I lose reception. HA, forget the rain. Give me a heavily overcast day, and BAM, there it goes.

I'm dreading to see what it's going to be like when it starts snowing. :(

If you are ordering the local TV stations package watch out for dish placement and trees. There are 3 DirecTV satellites. The one that provides the local TV stations is low to the horizon. My locals come in fuzzy (pixelated) during the summer until the leaves come down in the fall.

We've had it for a few years and LOVE it. We were dreading the fact that we may lose signal during rain or heavy cloud coverage, but we've been VERY lucky and have rarely had issues with that.

Not sure if it's a "South Florida" thing, but my friends that have it also comment on how great it's been with the signal and not going out.

Really? Have never had large problems with clouds. Even when the Thunderstorms build up overhead with the clouds that are miles thick. Only time we had problems was last winter when it did snow briefly and then only when the dish had accumulated an inch or so of snow. I just went outside with a broom and lightly brushed it off. Though southern latitudes have a dish that is aimed higher than northern locations.

All I know is we used to have Adelphia cable here and they didn't offer good packages. I would say that 6 out of 10 households in the area have DirecTV. Some apartment complexes even have it pre-installed for every unit.

Yes really. It's horrible. Could be because we live in the Mahoning valley, or whatever. But any slighty heavy rainfall and ya may as well turn the sucker off.

I'd give almost anything to go back to cable.

This is what we've been afraid of, and until it's PROVEN to us that this won't happen, we will not order DirectTV OR Dish Network.

We "inherited" a dish when we bought our house, and it's even wired up and ready to go, but we're happy with HD Cable for now. :)

My grandparents have it, but I've never really sat and watched it, or been at their place enough. I do remember one rain storm though I was watching their dog and this happened and it made me pretty leary to order it and we're all in the Ohio Valley here :-\.

Hopefully if its crap, its crap in the first 30 days or so and I'll cancel it and switch to cable

Yeah you should see it in the first 30 days with the onset of a rainy fall coming our way, it looks like so far.
Which valley do you live in? I'm in the Mahoning Valley.

    Good luck!

Do you have the oval 24 inch dish or the round 18 inch dish? The oval pulls signals from 2 satellites at a time so it is a stronger system and the system doesn't have to switch signals as often.

We have it at the ranch including internet and it actually does a decent job. The only real problem I guess is storms will knock it out every time which it rains a lot at the ranch.

We weren't given a choice - the round one is what they installed.

I've had DirecTV for about two years now. I don't really care much for the service either way. It's a little pricier than Dish Network. Since it rarely rains (or anything) here in San Bernardino, California, I can't tell you how bad reception is in adverse whether conditions. Also, I only had to call them up for support once (to activate the receiver I got to replace the old one that went bad), and the representative was courteous and knew what he was doing. The new receiver came in the mail promptly and I shipped back the old one for free in the same box.
