What's wrong with necroposting?

I really don't understand why some admins get upset over posting in old threads, when it's relevant and brings back a discussion which means more posts. It might even bring older members back, if they have email notifications turned on. What do you think?

 

I have to agree with you. I on the other hand don't have a problem and I don't see the big deal.

 

I don't see it as a big deal - as it continues discussion for the community, and sometimes can result into even more posts. I know some forum admins hate that fact if a new user bumps an old thread, but for what? It helps the community grow.

 

I agree to you both. I see it happen often on other forums im an active member of.

 

I always allow necroposting on my forums as it brings the discussion backs to life and creates more posting. I see nothing wrong with it.

 

Yea, its great for getting new posts. I also hate when some members backseat moderate and ask you why you are posting in an old thread. Those things get me real angry, as im a very laid back admin. Posting in an old thread shouldn't be a problem as the thread was created for the whole purpose of getting replies and having a great discussion.

 

As far as I have seen, the forums that do not allow it or do not like it are the forums with 100,000+ posts, 50,000+ members and an average of 300+ posts a day. If you have a smaller forum, like this one for example, necropostings could help the overall member and post base.

 

I dont see the post count or member count as anything important, as it still helps the forum either way I would say.

 

Why do you think some admins don't allow it though? I find it to be ridiculous and I don't post on communities that don't allow necroposting.

 

I think it is the most stupidest rule ever, as long as the post is relevant and still discussion worthy, why not bump up the old thread? I don't see the point in having lots and lots of threads all discussing the same thing over and over again, as you'll just end up keep repeating yourself all the time.

 

I know, thats why if a forum is very strict with necroposting, I just leave.

 

Yeah, rather keep it in the same topic than clattered around everywhere.

 

I agree... and at the same time they expect you to not create the same threads and reply to existing ones but no replying to old threads lol.

 

We don't have this rule on Chatting Time. One thing we do frown on is posting more than one topic on the same subject, but we don't have a rule against bumping up old threads. Like Ash said, even if a thread is a year or more old, and as long as you have something relavent to say on the subject, then I have no problems with you bumping up that topic, as long as you stay on topic and post things that are relavent to the subject. That is kind of a ridiculous rule to say the least.

 

One forum I have been participating in for quite awhile has this as one of their rules. They lock threads that are over six months old, and someone decides to bump it. What they suggest to get around it, is to create a thread on the same exact subject of the thread you want to reply to, link to it for reference, then continue the discussion in the new thread.

 

Whats the point in going through all that? lol.

 

I have no idea. I would rather reply to the thread, instead of making a whole new thread. But that is their rules.

 

Yea same here, they have some very complicated rules. I wouldn't bother posting there.

 

I have threads on my board about technology news posted a while back, such as "New Facebook" back when Facebook first changed their layout for the FIRST time.

There have been multiple facebook changes SINCE then, but the user has to go and bump it up with "I love facebook, it's great". It annoys the HELL out of me. Especially if the user is a paid poster or someone from a post exchange, they're really scraping the barrel.
