    Hi all,

I've been considering to get a license for either vB or IPB, mainly to learn how to theme for those scripts. (I only now theme for only 2 things, so yeah). I thought I'd go for vB as it seemed to be more popular, but I see many people leaving and getting IPB after vB 4 was out. I personally like IPB better (mainly due their front-end looking). But I'd like to know the opinion of much more experienced people on this field to advice me which one to get. The fact that one is harder to theme than the other is honestly not what will point me, but I'd like to know that too.

    Thanks,
    Combus

    IPB* or IPS Luv.

IPB is a pain to design for, now I LOVE to design for vB. It gives me a lot more freedom than IPB. Although we will end up designing for both IPB and vB, there are many users out there who will stay with vB 3.x series. You know I worked with MyBB, I tried to work with IPB and I got confused at first, I was too used to MyBB, but when I worked with vB, I was a bit more comfortable.

lol yeah, IPB on the title. I've also heard from other people that IPB is hard to skin. And vB seems to be popular, though, is the older version available for purchase now? Because I think that buying vB 4.0 to makes themes would be a waste since many people decided not to upgrade (oh that makes me wonder if themes are compatible with previous versions, or viceversa, but I guess not).

You can only make new purchases under the 4.x licensing, but if they haven't changed things, you should be able to download older versions as far back as 2.3.5. Again, this is only the case if they haven't changed things for new purchases. (Existing customers such as myself can download older versions still).

I don't know how hard either are to skin, but it looks like custom IPB skins are cheaper then custom vBulletin skins if that means anything. :)

Anyone selling a pre-4 owned license is certainly a viable option if you vB route. That's my only comment. Talk to JackPH or Shelby!!

I've seen that owned vB licenses are quite expensive (at laest IMO). I'd rather get IPB if the license is $100+. Though, I'm not sure if it'd be wise to learn to theme for a sytem which is most likely to start dying (that's kind of what I've read in some sites).

thanks :) I'll look into that. But I think I might go for IPB, since I like it more :P And themes for both scripts are farly easy (I even prefer IPB since you can control the basic structure of all pages with 1 template, unlike vB and MyBB). vB themes are just almost identical to MyBB (which I'm used to work with) so that might be a con.

Actually, even though can edit them in one page, they are not as 'moldable' as vB. I prefer to be clicking than to be breaking my head.

You will understand me when and if you buy IPB.

Well, they *seem* to be just like templates for vB, but they are all on a HTML file, and are separated by comments. But also the price of the owned vB license is cheaper than IPB (and I'm greedy lol). Do you think it'd be worth to start theming for vB 3.8 nowadays than there's a major updrade?

IMO, I use it, I own a vB 4.0 classic license, but I will stay with vB 3.8.x until vB has a MORE stable vB4. I like it, I suggest it. Many people will go like 'No, you're crazy' and shit, but I personally spent my money well.

Now I think I'll probably get an owned vB license, it's cheaper and themes looks very similar to MyBB.

Just a question: how many months of upgrades must the license have to be able to upgrade "free" or with a disccount (if that's actually possible).

You have to have a vB 4.0 Classic Forum for free upgrade.

If you have an active, owned vb3.8.x license, then you get the v4.0 Classic, if it is released BEFORE expiration of you owned license.

Example, mine expires in June, so I get to use 4.0 Classic up until that time. No upgrades after June 2010. That is my understanding.

    And you are correct. :)

    And IPB is a pain to skin for. I've tried. x_x;

I too prefer skinning vb, even 4.0 is easier. Skinning for IPB for one client drove me to drink.
