They can go off the air for a variety of reasons depending on how the channel is delivered to its customers. I would suspect that their computers could crash but most would have multiple redundancies to guarantee uptime. I know that a lot of broadcasters used specialized servers built by Microsoft, HP, IBM and Dell to maintain operations and 100% uptime. And no the servers provided by Microsoft are not your typical Windows machines. When someone pays a couple of million for a dedicated OS, the ones provided by Microsoft are rock solid. Chances are that even if a server does fail, the secondary will pickup the slack in less than a second while it automatically calls the server technicians and brings them into work.

I know when I worked for Protection One (an Alarm company), we had to guarantee the servers had 150% uptime. How did we do that? 3 Redundant RS/6000 Mainframes and multi-terabyte disk arrays all with the same duplicate data. If the current primary failed or needed to be taken offline for maintenance, the next server in line would need to take over in less the 35 milliseconds. Even the users working at the 10,000 workstations throughout the company never even noticed the failover process when it occurred. If a server failed, 200 people got phone calls and text messages to get to work in Wichita and California to fix it.
