You may not have realized it, but the wording you use to direct your visitors around can have a profound effect on your click-through rates. Dustin Curtis has been doing some experiments with different wording on the link to his Twitter account, and determined that the ideal phrase is "You should follow me on Twitter here", because it personalizes the text and implies an obligation.

    The original article is here:
You should follow me on Twitter | Dustin Curtis

Try it yourself and see if it increases your Twitter sign-ups! And you should follow me on Twitter here. *Jedi mind trick gesture*

Hm, interesting! I'd like some alternative wording to encourage members to register on the forum. I have used "Sign UP" and "Join Now" on my forum, as "Register" just isn't as clear as it needs to be.

It definitely helps. Plus the outcome once a person gets there ie - the landing page makes a huge difference.

If your text is "the best source for computer repair" and you send them to the main computer site instead of deep in the site that has to do with computer repair they probably wont join....

Wow. Cool advice there. I might even change the forum 'Register' to 'You Should Join Us For Free' or something.

The changes I mentioned above have worked better, in my opinion. I'm sure it will work for you as well. :)

If you use different variations in different locations around your page(s), that might make for the best results.

Nice one Nick. And is that "Join Now" image in your topics a modification or something you've done?

So you've seen results already, Nick? Did you do any tracking?

I did not do any tracking but I did notice a general increase in registrations. Now when visitors browse the threads, they see the content and interaction with the members and see "Join Us" or "Sign Up" and they feel like they have a chance to become a part of the interaction. I think it's a psychological invitation that urges them to join the crowd.

...Whereas, in the past, they would only "Register" when they had a question to ask rather than doing so for the sake of joining the community.

Oops, I almost missed this post. :p

I am using a modification for some of my advertisements, and manually implemented others in the templates. I'm not sure which method I used for that Join Us banner, but you can do it with simple template modifications. :)

That was a great little post!

Who would have thought those 4 little words would have changed it that much! I mean after reading it it makes sense, but I never really thought about it.
