Has anyone here used SMF? The only time I have used it is when I was on a Free Forum Host. I didn't like it - much prefer phpBB. :D

I have used just about every bb software, I would say smf is the worst. They have been stuck in RC for a long time.

Your at a disadvantage with free host as they limit your options with the software....there's a lot more to it than a free host lets you see in order to really judge it get a paid host and download and install it and you will see the difference.

SMF, Simple Machines Forum...Should Be: Simply Slow & Basic Machines Forum as it's an incredibly simple forum code base, yet development seems to be extremely slow for it so I don't get what the hold up on releases is all about

I started with them at the 1.0 stages, and back then, phpBB forums got hit easily by worms (the Santy Worm is the one I believe, wiped out loads of phpBB forums, many of which at that time converted to vBulletin), and MyBB didn't get big yet. That was 4 or so years ago. They haven't really moved forward at all. I will give them credit though. Their Package Manager feature is everything AutoMOD (on phpBB) wants to be and more (Package Manager also handles upgrades and modification installation, all by uploading a zip on the Admin CP), but other than that, they've been rather stagnant.

I don't agree. SMF is extremely fast and it's one of the best software out here. Better than PhpBB, MyBB and even XenForo. I know the development is slow, but you didn't looked at the changes between the RC's.

Its better for the releases to be slow than for them to put something out that has a lot of bugs in it.

SMF is not even close to XenForo, XenForo is a million times better.

Well I would not go quite that far. Xenforo being fairly new is somewhat plain and with out style.....

This is again is a matter of personal choice. Why would you worry about SMF to start with? If your not using it then don't worry about it. It seems that some feel SMF and other software maybe a threat to teenie bop Xenforo is that it? I am sure that the designers of this software are not a bit more worried about SMF or any other software....one's over priced and the other is free which most likely contributes to the fact that a lot of people use SMF ....
