What sort of signature limitations or guidelines do you have on your forum? And when a user is in violation of your signature guidelines, how do you handle the situation?

I prefer to just make sure they aren't too much of a distraction. I also used to say to avoid large image files, if images are allowed, to reduce load times, especially for slower connections.

Generally I would PM the member about what they are violating and may or may not remove that part of the signature right away. If you absolutely have to you can always remove their signature permissions all together, but if they can't abide by your signature rules to the point where you'd have to do that, I'm not sure why they'd even be a loyal member anyway.

I try not to limit too much what goes into a signature. However I have the images limited to 2 (including smilies) and the size limited so they aren't big enough to stretch the layout. I also don't allow links to sites which include pornography, warez, drugs, alcohol or anything illegal. If I did come across one of these links I would remove it straight away and just PM the member explaining why it was removed.

I'm generally pretty lax when it comes to what a member can include in his/her signature. As long as it's appropriate (or not too distracting if it's a graphic), it's all good with me. If a member somehow abuses my policy, I'll contact them via private messaging and handle it from there.

That is one way to look at it, which I agree with.

I have no sig rules other than a vendor who is in competition with a sponsor cannot use a graphic (banner) to promote their company/product. Other than that it's pretty much a free for all, everyone thus far has been pretty respectful of the no limits approach only a few times has a member's signature gotten too large and a simple PM with please scale it back has done the trick.

I find that by asking the member to scale it back rather than doing in yourself via the ACP and telling them you did it makes a world of difference in their response. :)

I completely agree with this, however if I did come across a link to pornography, drugs etc I would remove it the first instance I saw it. Mainly because most of my sites are PG 13 and often include younger people, and the last thing I want them to do is to click on one of those links.

I honestly haven't addressed this yet.

When it comes to Sigs I'm pretty laxed my self. As long as it's not over powering and in good taste I really don't mind. I think if anything was to come up where I needed to address a person's Sig, I would PM the person and ask them to resize and or delete it etc.

420x240 and generally no animated banners. If a companies want to advertise, they must go through me or another admin.

My members are pretty iffy about lag, so I try and keep things lite.

Legal, safe for work (at least on Elliquiy and PrP), following the general guidelines and spirit of the forum... other than that? I don't rightly care. I'm perfectly fine with people linking to competition so long as the competition links us back.

We have image size limits and signature size limits that correlate with our post count levels/ranks. So as you move up in the ranks, you gain more space for your signature.

Looking back, we probably made the maximum sizes a bit big. If I could do it over again, I would greatly limit the sizes of images people can post in their signature. The increases from each level would be much smaller.

When someone breaks our set signature guidelines, which are written out alongside our rules, they are given warning to edit/remove their signature. If nothing is done within a reasonable time (usually 24 hours), we remove the signature.

Only paid members can have signatures.

The signature restrictions have been set in the usergroup permissions. This includes font size, no images, maximum amount of characters,,,,,.

Rarely, and I mean very, very rarely does anyone violate my signature restrictions.

I tried installing a mod that would limit members to one link per signature (as stated in the rules), but it didn't work.

I don't really have any limits other than the ones set in-forum: 2000 characters, at most one sig image with 600x150 maximum size. If a certain sig starts getting too large, I PM that member. So far, no trouble.
