I read it all about a week ago as well. It's interesting, but I'd definitely like to know whether the other developers left vBulletin for similar reasons, although none of the other staff seem to have active blogs...

Sorry, didn't know it was old news. It was only posted four days ago and I just came across it today. I figured I'd post it for those who haven't seen it yet. :o

I was just teasing. Eventually you'll catch on to my teasing and/or sarcasm. 4 days is hardly "old news". ;)

I think Scotts scant details on the subject of Jelsoft echo the sentiments I've gleened from other ex-Jelsoft members. I'm glad he's landed on his feet and from the looks of things his period of unemployment was met with some wonderful experiances. So good for him. A shame we had to lose such a talented developer.

    ain't it the truth.

    IB's loss is Facebook's gain.

I'm envious. Facebook honestly looks like a place where you would actually want to go to work everyday.

Facebook hiring someone with forum experience? I wonder what kind of big changes facebook has in store for its community.

I never looked at it that way, but I doubt it's a sign of anything. I'm sure the bottom line is that he is experienced regardless of whether it's with forums or with something else.

Because the fact that he's a developer of PHP itself and a leader in the PHP Development world has absolutely nothing to do with it. :)

Like what? You develop forum software? You program in C++, PHP, ASP,,,,????

    -- edit --

Instead of me just throwing out random examples, lets get something you can relate to.

Yes, I'm a Forum Software developer, and my main language is PHP.

I also develop other forum software add-ons (mainly vBulletin, but I'm moving out to other products), for clients with specific needs.

May I ask why you wish to know? (Not that I mind, just curious :))

So if facebook wanted to develop their own custom forum script, you would be a good person to hire? Kinda like Scott MacVicar?

When a company hires someone, its not usually just for one trait, but for a combination of things.

Who knows, maybe facebook is getting ready to sell a social networking script? Maybe facebook is getting ready to add a forum built on custom software,,,.

Social networks rise and fall, just take a look at myspace. Maybe the managers of facebook are looking at selling a clone of facebook?

vbulletin started off as a forum, but the developers took that script, leased it and built a rather large company. Maybe facebook is planning on doing the same thing?

I see php developers like welders, engineers or any other profession - you can run an ad and get thousands of resumes. So ask yourself, what does someone like Scott MacVicar bring to the facebook project that is so special? Being someone with php experience is not really "that" special. So what else is there?

Considering the position for which Scott has been hired, I believe it is clear that his PHP experience is what got him the job. At least that's my opinion.
