Safari 4

I've gotta admit... I love it!

I really hated the beta, especially the way they had the tabs at the top of the browser in the title area. I later found out you can switch it back to the Safari 3 (standard browser) version with a Terminal command. Before I had the chance to do that, though, I uninstalled the beta and went back to Safari 3. Just recently Safari 4 launched and I downloaded it to give it another try.

I never thought it would be true, but it really is much faster. The tabs are back where they should be, the little loading icon (when the page is loading) is very nice, and it has some new features (that I don't use personally, but I'm sure others will) that are awesome, such as "Top Sites".

 

I'll be downloading in a bit...

 

Tell me if you find it to be faster (like your internet got faster). I do and I'm still shocked.

 

I guess I am only using Safari 3.2.3 still. You'd think it would auto-update already but I guess not. Not like I am in a hurry to upgrade, I never use the browser and not sure why I even still have it installed. Oh wait.. because Google Chrome is malware and I need a Webkit browser even though it has a crappy interface.

Its a shame that when Apple turned NextStep into Darwin and Cocoa, they got rid of the awesome NextStep interface.

Nice thing about Safari 4 is that the window borders inherit my Aero Glass settings and are transparent. The menu is also hidden by default having menus take up valuable screen space in the browser is annoying. Bad thing is the rest of the interface is just so boring and drab. Again its monochromatic gray which reminds me of the book 1984, the very thing Macs were supposed to be against. Also Apple must have paid a lot of money for the Cover Flow software. Its neat on an iPod flipping through music but not very practical in a web browser. Just give me a standard CTRL-TAB flip through tabs. Easier and quicker to get what I want.

 

Uhh, I actually love it... It IS faster. Loaded this page in half of the time FF loads it. and my internet is crap.

 

Didn't notice any difference myself. Just installed 4.0 because of this thread. Loads about the same in both browsers. I have fairly decent internet connection though.

Edit: @Wayne: Hm, maybe it is your internet connection. You're already very fast.

 

Probably. This site loads in 2.8-3 seconds using Firefox.

 

It's very nice - quick, no question about it.
