Way to get the kids at FP riled up about MyBB 2.0 going paid. Even if it did, you could just fork the source code, and hence, it'd be "free forever."

Mind you, IPB was licensed under its own software.

I don't think myBB is ready to be a paid forum software. It can't compete with xenForo and vBulletin and IP.Board. Unless myBB made their software very cheap I don't think people would pay for it.

MyBB will always be free, including 2.0. The reason for him leaving was exactly what he said - it had to do with a component of MyBB 2.0, but had nothing to do with the software going paid.

(I realize this is a response to an old thread, but I thought it needed to be said)

That I knew. It was just a few others thought otherwise. Besides, I already know all too well that even if it went commercial, all we have to do is fork 1.6.

Not really. Xenforo haven't proved itself in terms of security. You may not know it until hackers turn their attention towards it.
MyBB, on the other side has proved itself to be safe. Considering the fact that MyBB 2.0 is a complete rewrite, i'm sure it is going to adopt features that can compete well with others.
Though i know one thing from all of the MyBB staffs speech,, "MyBB is not going to be paid", atleast not for next releases. So we got less things to worry.
Sad thing that Ryan Gordan resigned, but everybody got their life to care about, atleast at some point.

xenForo is very secure, its uses a different framework from the other softwares, like all of its features and ajax capabilities makes it less vulnerable to hackers. I use it so I would know;)

While I don't disagree that XenForo is likely very secure, your reasoning is faulty. Just because it uses a different framework doesn't necessarily make it any more secure; after all, it's all PHP code in the end. The fact that it uses the Zend Framework, one that has been tried and tested by many websites and coders, however, does at least make its base more secure. "Features and AJAX capabilities" don't necessarily make it more secure, either; after all, the more features, the more code, the more likely there is to be a vulnerability in that code. Nor does using XenForo make you an expert on XenForo's security; that would be like saying just because you use a computer, you know all of the inner functioning of that computer.

All of that said, XenForo has proven itself (in terms of security) in a sense because of the people behind its development: Kier and Mike certainly have a track record with their time at vBulletin and have much experience in developing a secure forum software. Of course, it is still likely that there are some vulnerabilities to be found in XenForo, but that's the case for any software.
