Restricting Members after Registration

There are some discussion forums that "restrict" the privileges of newly registered members, even after they validate their e-mail account (if that's required). By "restrict", I am referring to the act of preventing them these members from...

• Posting in specific forums
• Editing their profile
• Using the private messaging system

... and so on, so forth. Do you believe in doing something like this? If so, what requirements have you put into place (i.e. making an introduction post first)?

 

It's always something I've concidered doing, but never have. I think I may make new members need to post a thread in the "Introductions" section before they can post anywhere else.

 

I restrict certain access until they have made 3 post. They can not download files, can not join the chat room, can not add dates to the calendar, can not add files to the downloads section,,,,

 

Generally, no. But if I sense a user might be a troll, I stick him in the moderated usergroup.

 

I only keep newly registered members restricted to what they cannot do before they become a premium member. But once registered, you technically have full access to everything you'll get.

 

I wanted to restrict New Members to our Introduction Forum so that they feel welcome when established members reply to the "required" Introduction Thread.

Do I need to make a new Usergroup to successfully restrict those with zero posts to my "New Member Introductions" Forum? Once the New Members post in the Introduction Forum, they will subsequently have access to the entire Forum.

I tried to do this, but I didn't do it right. I thought I had the Promotion right, but it didn't work.

I'm all ears for any suggestions from people that do something similar on their own forums.

Is it easier just to install a hack that does this?

 

Nothing is restricted, but everything is moderated (addition of calendar events, posting of visitor messages, etc.) until the user has made one post. Once approved, they are promoted to a "Full Registered Users" group.

I guess my only vulnerability is the sending of PMs. I'll have to look into patching that.
