Its amazing how when I am looking for a domain name, 99% of names I try have been taken and 99% or that 99% is a parked domain.

When the name it already taken, and I look at the site, rarely will it not be parked and rarely will the site have any real content on it. Its as if certain people and their companies are trying to corner the domain name market.

I heard that some people use scripts that run every 5 minutes to buy up expired domains with certain keywords in them. So its almost impossible to pick up an expired name and put a real site on it before its snatched and parked.

Yep they do, and I heard they get these domains for as cheap as 50 cents each, so if they generate a few clicks through the course of the year its a profit, then combine that with the fact they have hundreds of thousands of domain names for a year each its a lucrative business for some people.

You'll rarely see these domains parked for more than a year though. I agree though it completely f'in sucks that people do this. Its almost impossible to find any domain name worth the registration fee these days without buying it via 3rd party.

I went looking for some domain names yesterday and found that even some names I wouldn't expect a whole lot of interest in had already been snapped up by these guys.

I was not aware they were only paying 50 cents or so per domain, I imagine the scene would be quite different if they had to justify spending $9 or $10 each like the rest of us.

Finally, where can I get my hands on one of those scripts? There are a few expiring domains I'd like to snap up.

There needs to be some sort of rule against this. If you have a landing page for more than X-days or X-months, then it automatically gets removed, no refund. I know that's probably just frustration speaking, but I really hate finding out that my dream non-premium domain is taken for some damn couch potato's landing page, just to make some money off of it.

Someone clue me in as to why Parking even exists? (Honest question, I don't know what they are or what they do)

Thanks for the great information. It really is a shame, like others have mentioned. There are some domains that I could put to good use, but are sitting around unused and parked.

It is becoming harder and harder to find good domain names, as time goes on. It's like land: eventually it will all run out and we will have none left to buy for growth.

That's the one thing I hate when it comes to thinking of a domain. For me it takes ages thinking of decent ones anyway, but when most of them aren't even being used for a proper site really annoys me.
