post icon permissions by usergroup?

Does anyone have experience with using usergroup permissions on post icons? I've been thinking of a couple of special post icons for especially good threads that only mods and admins can add, but before I go to the trouble can anyone tell me if the post icons available for use during editing depend on the usergroup of the person who made the post, or the admin editing it?
