Do you use them? If so, what for? Has it proven to be a useful asset to your community, or do you think it's a waste?

The closest I've come to using a point system is the Living Avatars mod, where users can "buy" items with their posts. I haven't really investigated what can be done with point systems though. What are the practical uses? (As opposed to buying user titles or markup for your user name)

I'm using vBcredits with the free vBCommerce mod and the icon itemtype free add-on. Then, I added the cah conversion paid mod for folks to buy more credits (points) via their PayPal.

The members love it because I've incorporated our WDBling (virtual pins) as a major feature on the site with the help of our points system.

It's been great for us and the members have fun with it.

Don't know what a points system is, but I may enable certain features when peoples rep gets to a certain level as a thank you.

It's a system in which awards virtual "points" to members who complete certain tasks (i.e. post a new thread, post a reply, etc). With these points, these individuals can then purchase various items via a "community store" - these items can be anything, from a custom user title to a premium membership.

Vbcredits is sort of good but I dont understand how even though all the points settings were set to 1 for each setting that a member gained over 400 in around 5 posts lol

So vBCredits can be set up to work like vBPlaza with virtual "items" and ribbons and such?

No, I do not use a points system. I thought about it, but what would I really use it for? What could my members use the points for? I do not see any real use in it.

I intend to install vBCredits and vBCommerce once RHM has grown up some.

Arny's set-up has made me think I should start using a point system to let members buy colorful ice cream treats for their profiles...

Really? That sounds like a good product. I've never actually installed any of the credit/store products so never had experience in what users can actually purchase. I've seen the worst on some phpBB sites where users buy rather annoying rotating animated .gif images. Need to check out these mods and maybe give it a try.

I think they're useless when they're used to simply keep track of the user's activity. If they are modified to be used for something like a contest, a way to get special permissions/actual rewards, or can be purchased with real money and used on your marketplace, they can be good to have.
