PC Fan Loud

Every since i think i upgraded my laptop to 4GB ram (back in august) its just been loud..now its not noticiable on my wooden desk but on my bed and i just had it on my bed side table as i was watching a movie from my PC it was just loud throughout.


DXDIAG finds no problems on all the tabs that are available

I always have the laptop plugged in, Power Plan = Balanced, Brightness = low (its 4am, full bright just blinds me atm :lol: )


What could be causing it?

 

What does a fan do? It cools things down so they don't overheat, correct?

You don't get much fan noise on say a wooden desk or even a glass desk because they suck in the head emitted from the bottom of the computer and spread it out. They are like huge heatsinks. Glass words better than wood in my experience.

There are either 1 or 2 fan ports on the underside of your laptop, with 1 port on the side giving off exhaust heat. Putting your laptop on a bed would decrease the amount of air being sucked through the bottom port and outside the side. Watching a DVD movie causes the DVD drive to work at high speeds to read the data, your hard drive is also spinning, your CPU is also working at full power (if you have it on step power) to show the movie. Your computer will heat up faster this way, and it needs the fans inside to spin constantly to keep the computer components from frying.

The rams in computers rarely get hot. If I touch my RAM sticks now, they're slightly warm, but usually cool to the touch.

 

I've also heard of fans getting obnoxiously loud if they're running on an uneven surface. So if the laptop/computer isn't even it generates more noise sometimes (This is only what I've heard, never been able to confirm it)

But if your fan is running louder and louder it could also be imminent doom for your fan. Try to perhaps clean the case out some, it could have a lot of dust built up in there, which acts as a good insulator of heat for computers (bad thing)

I cant simply clean it, its a laptop...

 

Get an air cleaner that is used for PCs. You may not hit the fan directly, but jostling it up in the vents may be enough. Otherwise, take it Bust Buy or similar and pay the nominal cleaning service. If it's still loud, then you've eliminated the cleaning issue, which benefits the PC overall, however, its then more like what David says....imminent doom (I.e.,bearing going out).

 

Point at the laptop - and in a very firm voice say "shut up, be quiet".

If laptop does not listen or shut up, grab a hammer, baseball bat, or some other firm object and proceed to beat the laptop.

When fan finally goes quiet (which is will sooner or later) - point at laptop and in a very loud, firm voice yell something like "you should have listened the first time you stupid piece of $%#$%^%, now look at you. I bet you wont ever be loud again huh."

Dispose of laptop, maybe bury in garden behind the house, throw in river,,,,,. When friends and family ask where laptop is, tell them it got strung out on world of warcraft and ran away with a Dell server.

cleaning a laptop isn't as hard as you might think
there isn't much room inside a laptop, see if you can get to the fan or cooling vents and try to blow them out, a can of compressed air is only a few bucks and can save your cpu from overheating.

 

Actually, cleaning a laptop isn't hard at all. You'll just need about a can of compressed air. You'll want to blow into the side port and bottom ports, remove the battery pack and press the power to dissipate the charge. Spray into the battery area and little holes. Turn the computer over, and open the ram area and hard drive area, blow the can in there, and you're done. Laptops don't get much dust into them if you keep your work area relatively dust free.
