Onions are an easy crop to grow in a home garden. They tolerate soil conditions easily and can be grown just about anywhere.

Use some good compost, chicken manure, rabbit manure or some organic potting soil for slow release nitrogen. If you do not organic potting soil or manure, mix in some 21-0-0 with the soil.

As the onions grow, throw some 21-0-0 into the garden every 2 - 3 weeks. This will promote large shoots to grow, which in return make bigger bulbs.
