It's not pretty, but other than that all scripts are finalized and ready to get to work.

I'm only announcing this right now because we haven't been paid for our latest work yet with our t-shirt business, and it's been months since we received our last check. We're broke.

I'm limiting the space available right now to a total available size of 11GB of backup space and a minimum of 1GB because I'm focusing at the moment on smaller forums.

I will accept non-forum sites, but I'll be opening another site for any type of site soon.

What you get: Six "hourly" file backups per day (at four hour intervals), plus on daily backup per day, and one monthly backup for three consecutive months.

You also get one MySQL backup per day plus five weekly and three monthly backups.

File backups are not compressed, but the cool thing is that only files that have been updated or added are backed up per cycle, so unless you make many, many changes every day to your files, you don't need to worry about bandwidth usage.

MySQL databases are compressed, so unless you have many blob entries in your databases like images, your backed up sql files are relatively small.

In general, you will want 2-3 times the amount of backup space that your combined SQL and file sizes on your active site.

A couple of things you should know: You MUST have access to your sites files and databases (I'm sorry, but I cannot do anything for people hosted on "community" sites where you only have admin access to your forum and no access to the files or database.). Also, your account MUST have shell access. All transfers are done over secure shell connections.

This is a great offer for people, as you said, smaller sites. I'm ok as my provider takes backups as well as myself.

If your an admin that may not be comfortable with this part of adminning. I suggest you give Chani a go. She's top notch in many aspects of sites, vB, and much much more!

On thing people should understand is that if your host doesn't offer off-site backups, read your terms of service. You will find that most do not allow archiving or general storage. They need to be website-specific.

Not only are we offering off-site backups in case something tragic happens with your host's data center, but you also get access to your files any time you want them, which most hosts do not offer.

Let's say you overwrote an important file. Go into your backups and pull that file from the previous day's archive. Voila! Problem solved!

Also, on request, we will set up a folder in your space that you can keep any files you like.

I should add that redundant backups will be coming this week, so not only are you getting off-site backups of your scripts and databases, but you're getting backups of your backups, also.

Also, you cannot accidentally overwrite your backups. You can download them for your own use, but you cannot write to those folders. This is just a little extra protection for your data.

That's why I mentioned that if you'd like a special fold for your own use that I can add it. That folder will be readable and writable for you.

We all hate insurance charges, but as some of you know, it's a really good feeling to know that you have it when you need it, and a real issue if you don't.

http://www.astromechfactory.com is a small forum, but you can take a look at its stats, and know that currently the space that it's backups take up is about 800M...actually a little less than that. This is for all files, including that user's home directory, and the database. On this site the database compression ratio is about 75%, and on scifiscapes.com it's about 80%.
