Yeah, people that do that shit are just stupid. I don't care how important it is, your cell phone is last priority when you're in a car.

On vacation this year, a friend who went with us was driving, not just once, but 3 or 4 times, she ran a red light. ONE of those times, she almost hit an individual on a bicycle.

When we got home, she found a ticket in her mailbox for $85. What did she do? She laughed at it. Of course, she paid it, but to her it was funny.

People are incredibly irresponsible while driving, which is why I don't drive. Put down the cell phone, you don't need to take a picture, or text, or update your damn facebook, you need to pay attention to the weapon you're in charge of that could easily kill a number of people by your ignorance.

Yeah, needless to say I'm rather passionate about that subject. There's no excuse for texting and driving. Talking on the phone? Sure, IF you do it responsibly (ie: you are using bluetooth, and can keep yourself aware of your surroundings), but texting, facebooking, all that crap? It can wait!

My sister was just recently involved in an accident. The driver collided into the side of her car, blasting her (along with her friends) into a stop sign and then into a ditch. They were all injured severely, but are recovering swiftly.

Reason: driver was on her cell phone, claiming that her excessive speed and lack of attention were due to "a call with her friend". Because of this, she also failed to recognize that she was in a "Right Turn Only" lane (and NOT an appropriate passing lane). I have no tolerance for individuals who choose to drive and/or act like this.

It's good to hear that your sister and friends are allright, and it's tragic that this kind of stuff happens because of ignorant individuals out there.

I wonder though, will this accident cause the OP to stop using her cell in a car? Most likely not, given her "excuse".

What does it take to get people to realize these vehichles aren't just "cars", but weapons that must be used properly, I wonder.

Is it illegal to drive whilst on your mobile/cell phone in the U.S. as it is in Britain?

It's illegal here, but people do it anyway. This really annoys me.

Yeah, it is illegal, but some stupid people keep ignoring such laws and harming others.

Illegal? No, and it shouldn't be.
It is illegal in most states to drive while using a cell phone without a hands free device (IE: bluetooth), however.

As long as you're using a BT device, you can concentrate on driving, which is good, providing you're not so easily distracted that a conversation will cause you to have an accident, in which case you shouldn't be driving in the first place.

Yes, naturally you can use a bluetooth headset over here as well - I mean generally using a handheld mobile.

To be honest, I tend to not use Bluetooth HandsFreeLink in my car while driving. Regardless of the fact that it's easy to use and allows me to remain in control of the vehicle while conversing, I like to be focused entirely on the road and my surroundings. This sensation has become particularly enhanced after the event mentioned above - I do not want to deal with such a situation again, nor do I want my sister to.

She happens to have Bluetooth connectivity in her car, as well. She firmly believes in using such a feature only when the car is at a complete and total stop.

I could not agree with you more, Tom. The constant texting and web browsing while driving is simply unacceptable.
