I can remember discussion of MyBB charging for one of the newer versions, but that's not going to happen now, I don't think.

So, do you think MyBB will ever turn into a paid forum software once they get more popular and add in some better features?

I have changed the thread title to reflect better on the discussion.

As for it going paid, im sure it wont.. I thought it would when MyBB's former Lead Developer Ryan Gordon left, and Ryan blogged about it, and the way he said certain things made it sound like he left because Chris wanted to turn MyBB 2.0 into premium software, atleast thats what it sounded like to me. But the MyBB shot that down, and said it will stay free.

It would certainly increase their productivity, but I think the reason people use MyBB is because it's free. It's great, though.

I don't think they will, MyBB is originally a fork of another forum software, so they would have to re-write every little thing and change the license, otherwise they'd be breaking the licences, etc.

Also, IF it did go paid, someone else would probably fork the last free version and continue development for it for free, etc.

Unlike IPB, it won't. MyBB is released under the LGPL so even if they make, for example, 2.0 commercial, all they have to do is fork 1.6 or anything else and thus it will always be free.

The exact same argument can be put on phpBB as well.

I agree phpBB and MyBB are no different. I highly doubt any of them will ever go paid in the future.. but as el canadiano said people will just fork it.

can you please elaborate more within your posts, we need to keep the discussion going, and if people don't give their reasons, expand more on their posts? How can we discuss things?

Well, you'd have to be a pretty big moron to use phpBB, let alone pay for it.

As for MyBB, absolute worst case scenario: MyBB 2.0 will go paid and someone will fork 1.6 (Call it YourBB?). "MyBB will always be free" doesn't mean much because that's exactly what IPS said, but I'm almost certain 2.0 will be free because they've already announced it as such. It'll also be the only free MVC-based forum software out there (to my knowledge).

Yea I had thought MyBB 2.0 would go paid and its most likely would out of the other free software but MyBB said many times it would stay free.

The difference with IPB and how they got away with it, is because they wrote up their own licence, where as MyBB is on a GPL, therefore someone can fork it, but with IPB you couldn't

Yea that is why, alot of people compare IPB to MyBB, and phpBB but they clearly don't know how it was possible for it to go paid.

I hope MyBB always free. My plan soon I'll create a forum using MyBB. consider the benefits of it from other free software.

Yea, I always prefer it over any other free alternatives and I like it much more than vBulletin which is not free.

MyBB will never go paid, if it does then its got big competition with vBulletin, IPB and Xenforo
