Last night I posted a thread in a forum - where I have been a member for over 2 years - received an infraction and the thread was deleted. The thread was about a contest I'am having on a forum that my son and I run.

Even though I took and chance in posting the thread, and figured that is how it would turn out - I dont guess being a good member matters. Because your treated just like the rest of the spammers in the end.

To me, that shows a lack of respect from the moderators to the members.

    Real life examples:

You have a friend that goes over to your house, knocks on the door, nobody answers. So he cracks the door and calls out your name. You hear him, you go to the door and welcome him.

If a stranger goes to your house and does the same thing, you would probably say - "get out of my house, what are you doing?".

We treat people we know differently then the way we treat strangers. But in the world of forums, I dont guess that matters.

I think this really would depend on the forum. Some forums have very structured rules and they can't just bend them for 'good' members (what defines a good member - post count? time they've been a member? how well they know the mods?). Other forums are a bit less structured and allow leeway in most rules.

As for the real life example - I'd get pissed off at *anybody* other than family who cracked open my door. Seriously.

For all we know the admin on that forum might be thinking "he's been a good member for two years now so he thinks he can post advertising with impunity? I can't let him get away with this or all the newbies will think it's ok." If I were you I would try sending a private message to them, explain that you think your contest will be of interest, and ask how you can publicize it on the forum. Maybe they'll suggest something like a sig link.

    i think its legitimate.

being an old, active and "good" member doesnt redeem the fact, that you have to follow the rules as a user and non-admin.
i'm sure the rules in this forum said, that this type of threads arent welcome.

on the other hand, imagine you're on an other forum and you are a new member.
you post a thread where you critizise the staff member for instance.
an other member of the forum, who is longer registered than you and perhaps is more active writes a same thread.
you get banned and the other member not. would you consider that as "fair"? Probably not.
it all depends on your point of view.
Although forum rules arent mandatory, you as a user have to stick with the rules, to evade possible arbitrariness.

It really depends. I honestly don't think it's right to treat members differently based on their "status". How would you feel if somebody posted the something very similar to what you did, and it gets to stay because that member has been registered for twice as long as you have, and has twice as many posts? You wouldn't think it's fair, would you?

Consistency is important in order to remain fair for everybody, even if it means zapping the most-established members.

In a way, I agree what whats being posted - I'am just mad that I got an infraction.

Over the past 13 - 14 years of being on the internet, I can count the number of "infractions" I have received on one hand. I think this is number 3 or number 4.

Sorry, but IMO it shows a lack of respect by you for the forum rules, you even knew before you posted it what the likely outcome would be, which makes it even worse. The moderator was doing their job.

There is nothing to be sorry about. And you are correct.

Count your lucky blessings you can count your infractions on one hand. To count all mine I would need 10 pairs of hands all of them coming from the same stupid maintained forum ran by clowns.

I've never been warned or given an infraction - I guess I'm a "good boy".

I once got an infraction for putting one too many links in my sig... and once for posting a topic too much like an existing thread. (I did search, just used the wrong words!)

I've received a few infractions. :giggle:

One at DP for posting in the wrong section (no warning or PM), two at vB.com (one of which was reversed 7 months later - in June), and a warning at Sitepoint. That's about it I think.

Spamming is Spamming, if it was against the forum rules you more or less got what you deserved, if it was within the forum rules then the admin is just power hungry
