So, how many tabs can you open without FF crashing?

I stopped at 1,000 tabs because, well, I got bored. FF is now only using up 214K of memory. I probably could of kept going, but I got bored.

I've gotten up to a couple hundred open when going through Google Reader and opening stuff in new tabs. Firefox seems to lock up temporarily though not completely crash on my computers with anything over 50 or so tabs.

It started freezing up for a split second at around 400 or so tabs.

@Abomination: Why windows? That's the point of having tabs isn't it? To keep from having so many windows opened lol.

When you're dealing with 48 tabs in total, it's easier to divide them into separate windows as opposed to keeping them all in the same window. Imagine scrolling through all of the tabs just to switch amongst them. :P

TabMixPlus FTW. It sets tabs to rows instead of scrolling through them. There's also addons that can get tabs so you don't have a scroll through them.

Wait... why would I want to try something that would crash the internet browser? But still, I got to a few hundred, then got too bored to continue opening tabs. No computer slowdown either.

I to do the multiple instances of FF with multiple tabs in each. Very useful when working on documenting projects. One instance has a preview of the doc and iterations as changes are made. Another instance with multiple pages of the app being worked with for screen caps and details. Yet another instance with AA and other "play" sites. Often there are also instances for other research open as well. many times since I need to see how things render in other browsers there are instances of Opera, Chrome, Safari and IE open as well. This is where 3 22" wide screens comes in handy...and if I could fit a 4th on my desk, I would.

    Wow, fast moving thread.

I use multiple windows to divide 'functions'. One is my main window with email accounts, my forum, and a few high priority places, then other windows for less important things each going lower in priority. The lowest priority window / tabs get checked 1/day.

take a look at the speed dial add on for firefox
not quite the same as tabs but very very useful

don't know how I worked without it

certainly worth an experiment to see if it suits you

for me 4 x 4 works best (22" screen) but you could have 10 x 10 with around 20 tabs so 2000 sites within 3 clicks

My fiance thinks I'm odd for having about seven or eight FF windows with several tabs each and about six or more programs open at one time.

He only ever has one IE window and CorelDRAW open at once.

It sounds like your default internet browser is set to IE.

In FireFox, click on "Tools > Options..." and select the "Main" tab.

Toward the bottom, you'll find a box labeled "System Defaults" with a button labeled "Check Now" in it.

When you click on the button, you be prompted to select whether or not you want FF as your default browser. Click "Yes" to make it the default and close the "Tools > Options..." pane.

All links should now open in FireFox when you click on them.
