    I recently tried out a new Google AdSense position on one of my forums and it's been performing quite well. I'd say for 90% of the days since I implemented it, it has been the highest earning one of all my spots.

    It's not very intrusive but as I said seems to be performing nicely.

    This is just a 234x60 text ad box.

    vBulletin instructions

    In the navbar template, find this code:

    Code:
    <div class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a> <strong>$vboptions[bbtitle]</strong></div>
    </if>
    </td>
    And immediately below it, insert:

    Code:
    <!-- Google AdSense Ads -->
    <td class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt; padding-top:1px" colspan="3" bgcolor="#CEDED1">[COLOR=Blue]
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    google_ad_client = "pub-7571881600074829";
    /* 234x60, created 4/26/09 header-nav */
    google_ad_slot = "9713873193";
    google_ad_width = 234;
    google_ad_height = 60;
    //-->
    </script>

    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
    </script>
    [/COLOR]</td>
    <!-- End Google AdSense Ads -->
    The blue code signifies what you will need to replace your ad-code with. It should be similar to mine.

    I'd like to hear how this works for you if you try it. :)

    I have actually seen this start to be added to a bunch of forums now and was wondering just how well it was doing!

    I guess I got my answer! hah :)

    Really? I haven't seen it used anywhere else (that I recall...).

    And thanks for the Tweet. :D

    Yeah, I can't remember where I have seen them but it has been some bigger forums ;)

    I also use google search with ads on my forum. I basically got rid of the vb search and use that. It's also much faster!

    Anytime!

    Yeah, I have heard this was being used more. I have seen it on like 4 sites today. I am kind of iffy on it. I mean it's kind of ugly. People claim it gets good clicks because people accidentally click on it when trying to sign in and such. But, I have also heard if you use any hack to make your new private messages stand out, like blinking background or a blinking image or something, that it could be breaking the adsense TOS. Might want to look into that, just a suggestion. Something to do with calling peoples attention to it.

    That's a good point to mention...

    Anyways, I don't see it to be that ugly and I haven't had a single complaint about it (and the forum I implemented this on is a very vocal group, if you catch my drift).

    Thank you. Same with yours.

    When they blend in well they really don't look all that bad. You can't really tell they are there.

    I have noticed anything from the top of the first category up (no matter the size now) gets the best payouts. So this, like you have already said, will get good payouts.

    Exactly. I have a 125x125 text ad in my header (to the right of the logo) and it is my best-performing position of all time.

    Mine fluctuates almost randomly. Some weeks it performs well for a few days, other weeks it doesn't do much. It hasn't been doing its best for the past 7 days though.

    What format and size do you have in the footer?

    I have a small banner text & image ad.

    Overall I don't make anything at all. It's kinda useless even having the ads on my forum but I guess it's better then nothing and there not to over powering when you visit the site.

    Kevin, I thought I don't make anything either. One day I decided to put a few ads up and didn't think much of it. I checked my AdSense earnings a couple of times per week and saw that I earned a few cents here, a few cents there; nothing to get excited about.
    Well here we are a year later and I just reached my first $100 a week ago. Although $100 in one year isn't appealing, guess what? I'm about to have $100 that I didn't have before, to put towards the site. Now I can maybe buy a new premium add-on or something to improve the site. Or run a competition and give away some sort of prize.
    Just put AdSense to the side and in the long run, you'll get something out of it.

    It took a long time to earn it, but I sure am glad to have earned something.

    Yeah thats how I figure it also. So far everything that has ever been bought or done on the site has come out of my pocket and that is tough. But it's all in fun :)

    So can anyone explain Adsense in a way that makes sense to an idiot?

    I have a Google Adword account and it keeps asking if I want to upgrade to Adsense. I'm honestly not looking for generic advertising on my web site. All I'm using adwords for is to advertise my site. Is Adsense set up where you can either aacept advertising on your site or pay to advertise on other sites?

    Thanks
    Ray

    Google AdSense and AdWords are different. Simply put, AdWords is where you pay to have your ad displayed on the websites of other publishers that are participating in the AdSense network. You use AdSense to generate ads (for free) to place on your website. (These ads are those of webmasters who are advertising through AdWords). Everytime a visitor clicks an AdSense ad on your website, you earn money - usually pennies; some times more than others.

    Here's more info about what AdSense is: https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9712

    AdWords: Have your ad displayed on websites all across the web and pay evertime somebody clicks your ad.
    AdSense: Display the ads of other websites and get paid everytime a visitor clicks any of the ads.

    Hope this helps :)

    Thanks :D

    I may consider Adsense later on after I get a bunch of paid members/sponsors but it doesn't interest me know.

    Getting back to the original gist of the thread, I have an affiliate ad in the navbar in one template; it's actually a graphic but blends in attractively with the
    background color. It has an awesome CTR!... but still no sales. :(
