Nothing here but using Time Warner on their extreme package so I don't get bandwidth shaping.

Do you have a home router/firewall? If so, you might be having DNS issues. It happens when a home router acts as a DNS proxy instead of passing DNS request to your ISP DNS servers.

Check your settings: Click start - run - type in command - hit enter - type in ipconfig /all and hit enter.

Look for DNS server - what is the IP address? If its 192.168.X.X, 10.10.X.X, or 172.X.X.X - your home router is doing DNS proxy. It can cause sites to time out and other "strange" internet problems.

Is that your computers IP address or the IP address of the DNS server? If the DNS server, DHCP and default gateway all have the same IP, then your firewall is doing DNS proxy.

What is DNS Proxy - Its when your computer ask for a website, and a request is sent to the DNS server for the name to be resolved into an IP address. Instead of asking your ISPs DNS server directly, your computer ask your firewall for the name resolution. The firewall then ask your ISPs DNS server for the name resolution. The name resolution is then sent back to the firewall, and who then gives it to your computer.

The problem is, a lot of firewalls do a sorry job of it, their not designed to do DNS proxy and there is no need in it.

To fix the issue - call your ISP - or log into the router interface - and get the IP address of your ISPs DNS servers.

Go into windows TCP/IP settings, and enter the IP addresses of your ISPs DNS servers. Make sure you have at least 2, I like to have 3 or 4.

This will make your computer talk directly to your ISPs DNS server and bypass the router from doing name resolution.

There is no need in a home router doing name resolution. But for some reason, companies like netgear and linksys set their routers up like that. This is also one of the most common causes of internet connection problems and most people dont know about it.

My older netgear router, it will not do DNS proxy for windows vista. If you connect a vista computer to my home network, it can not get internet access. I HAVE to enter static DNS ip addresses into vistas TCP/IP configuration, and then it can get internet access. Now go figure that one out.

Your computers IP address should be different then the DNS - unless you have some kind of dns proxy software installed. Which usually happens when you have spyware / malware installed.

    Anyway,,,,,

Did I forget to mention I'am the network admin for the company I work for? I maintain 4 offices, couple of servers and a bunch of workstations.

I also used to work for an cable modem internet service provider in Houston, Texas.

I went home and did a ipconfig /all and my DNS was different than my IP, and wasn't set to a local network (208.x.x.x) or something along those lines.

I'm gonna try to uninstall and clean install FireFox, just realized it isn't happening in IE or Chrome.

Run a scan for malware, you might have a browser highjacker installed.

Its difficult to tell without running a connection test. Try one of these two programs, either one should do the job. When I have problems connecting to a website, I use one of these to test the connection.

Both of those programs hit every router between your computer and the server your trying to reach. Whether its a game server, web server, ftp server, it does not matter. Packet lose is measured, latency is measured and updated like every 3 - 5 seconds. You can see the route your packets are taking, and its updated in real time.

WINMTR - download it from sourcefoge
. Scroll down until you see Download WinMTR binary: winmtr_bin.zip

3dtracert - download it from the 3d traceroute home page. When you are tracing a route, click on "As List" at the top of the program. Its a lot easier to read that way.

Use one of those 2 programs, and trace a route to the page your wanting to visit. You should be able to see where the connection problems are at.

If the connection is good all the way to the server, then its a server problem.

    ------

BUT,,, you should really scan your system for malware. Download malwarebytes from download.com and do a complete system scan. Be sure to click the update button before you do the scan. Just to make sure you have the latest malware detection patterns installed.

You could have a highjacker installed on your computer. And that could be causing problems with your internet connection.

    Your welcome.

What will sometimes happen, a computer will get a browser highjacker installed on it. You type in one address, and it tries to redirect you to another page. You could type in youtube.com, and the highjacker would redirect you to somespamsite.com.

But, if the page that your supposed to be redirected to is down, the browser will report an error.

I do home computer repair on the side, besides my full time job. People will bring me their computers and say they can not get on the internet, or its really slow. A lot of times its just a malware problem.

Most of the computers I fix have 5 things in common:

    1. Have not installed security updates from microsoft
    2. Outdated anti-virus
    3. No hardware firewall on a high speed connection
    4. They visit Myspace a lot
    5. They use internet explorer instead of firefox

The next thing I suggest is to stop using internet explorer. Internet explorer has activeX built in that allows sites to do drive by installs. If the security in internet explorer is low enough, you can visit a specially crafted web page and your computer can have malware installed on it. And you will never know what happened. This is especially true if the latest security updates have not been installed.

Besides activex, there are javascript exploits, pdf exploits,,,,,, the list is a mile long. But its very important that people keep their systems up to date with the latest security patches.

    I have MS updates

    I have anitvirus/spyware/malware

    I have firewall

    I don't use myspace( lol)

    I don't use IE, i have fire fox 3

The issue i have doesn't happen every night or day, just now and again...sometimes it's worse than others..i thought it was our server but they say not....so i have done an ipconfig/all and done a print screen imahe and emailed it off and see if they can use that for info...

So no malware on pc as far as my scans tell me.....so it's either the router ip taking time or a sever issue as i don't get a problem on sites not on that server.....

thanks for your help though kevin..very much appreciated..
