Like most I've been reading about the new vBulletin 4.2 and see it's offering some neat new features. For the first time in years I'm starting to see Internet Brands getting some praise with this release, the tide seems to be turning in their favour and about time really.

Just wondering what others think about this new vBulletin 4.2?

It's a step in the right direction. There still needs to more improvements to many areas of the product, but, at least they are moving forward. The admincp is still a mess and is only getting worse with each new third party addon that they add.

At the moment I'm well behind speed on catching up with what's happened at vBulletin, it's been two years for me since last reading what's going on their with development. I feel kind of lost using the site at the moment, I don't understand half the stuff people are talking about because it's been that long for me. I feel like a duck out of water.

Am I right in thinking Mark.B is now on the Alpha testing team?

AdminCP should be left alone til the very end, if at all. it's functional if untidy in places, but it works and end user improvements should be the priority.
    You would.

I've just this second installed vB 4.2 Beta 1 now on localhost, going have a look at it now first hand.

I have just upgraded a test mirror of my live site, I hope to deploy this beta live fairly soon, subject to extensive testing of course.

There's not really a lot to break other than the new functionality which can be merely disabled in the event of a problem, so there are few massive risks with this beta.

I don't know if I have any suite licenses left to test it even if I wanted to. I do have a 3.8.7 license that must be expired by now.

Unless IPB does something silly like sell out to IB then I have no reason to go elsewhere or try out anything vbulletin.

Doesn't anyone find it odd it took this long for the real vbulletin 4 to show up?

Doesn't matter, I don't have suite license and can download latest version of vB 4.2 Beta 1. It doesn't come with the CMS .e.t.c, just forum package and some other stuff like forum runner included. I'm adding a signature link in a second here (not putting it in post because won't be able to edit it out after). You can click it using my IP address to have a look and it using File Cache menthod, putting it live for a few hours only installed on my localhost over the web. I will be taking it down later and removing link from signature - guest posting (is enabled) there also to have a play around if you want?

I registered to test it out. Seems to be much faster than previous versions.

What's wrong with vBulletin today, 3 times now I'm seeing a database error page displayed, then the site comes back again soon after?

I get the same, something's obviously up with the server again.

Well after testing, have to say I'll stick with using XenForo myself. It's not for me vBulletin 4 and hopefully when vB5 comes around it'll be a full rewrite offering something completely different. But can't see that one happening?
