This is a very general question and there is a lot of things to do in order to rise up in the SE's. Make sure your keywords are targetted, good meta description, optimised homepage and other forum pages too, choosing the best and most relevant keywords, semantic coding and use of heading tags the list could go on forever :)

Relevant and good unique content as well as plenty of back links is needed too.

There are dozens (if not hundreds) of factors that search engines use to rank sites - especially google.

The first place I would start is to setup a google webmaster tools account. This will tell you "how" google sees your site. You will be able to see what the important keywords on your site are, as google sees them, and you will be able to submit a sitemap.

There is no "one" thing that you can do to improve your ranking,,,, well, I take that back. One thing you need to make sure you do do - is stay away from spam filled directories.

Your site needs to be looked at as a whole. Do not pay attention to "just" one part. Some people get tied up on developing backlinks, and get so focused on that, that they do not take the time to post quality content.

    Some points to look at:
    Update on a regular basis
do not submit to spam filled directories
optimize your site title and meta description
make sure google does not index useless parts of your site
    submit a sitemap
    optimize your images
    use tags in your articles
    proper keyword placement
    interlinking to your own articles
link only to sites that have a good reputation
never link to a spam site

the list goes on and on.

On the not indexing useless parts of your site, sometimes google will index buttons, and the html code and display that in the search results. To stop this, use a robots.txt to stop the indexing of the image folder for your theme.

Do a google search for your site and look at the results. Take a good look at "what" google is indexing on your site.

Is google indexing "welcome guest", or is it indexing the actual thread title and description. I had a problem with a certain forum software and theme - google would index the title of every thread as "welcome guest" instead of the real title of the thread.

Hey Kev, I use Tags a lot but was wondering if it was worth asking my members to use tags or install some type of auto tag mod?

    Thanks,

This involves a lot of process.
You got to identify keyword phrases which you think you could compete at.
After which do a lot of in-page optimization.
Then next is the off-page optimization.
It would take many articles to discuss both. Try Googling about them.
    Good Luck! :)

One of the smartest ways to make sure you get top search engine rankings is with article marketing and blog marketing. You start by submitting simple articles like this consistently on search engines and eventually you get top rankings. It is the way many of us have done it. But of course, that is not all to it. There are way faster and simple ways to achieve rankings for your given keywords and that is by using the best article submission link service you can find online to get your top rankings.

This I agree with, 100%. It speaks to your reputation rather than not. :)
