Does your host allow ssh access? If so, do you ever use it?

Indeed, they do - dedicated hosting. :) I've never had any use for it, however.

It's a bit complicated. If you don't know exactly what you're doing, it's best to not play around with it at all.

True, but when it comes to SSH access, you may want to be a bit more careful - accessing the server in such a manner could result in a variety of user-created problems... particularly if you aren't familiar with the proper commands.

    I've heard horror stories.

This is why I would love a guide on what you can do when using it. We just upgraded to a VPS and we originally wanted to get nginx server installed installed instead of apache, to be honest I wouldnt know where to start :D

There are quite a few "getting started" guides available (I'll try to find them for you), and I'm sure that there are members of this community that would love to help you out. ;)

At the moment, I'm focusing solely on AA. ;) I find that building and managing a single community (rather than working on a variety of them) delivers superior results.

It's not for everyone, but I think learning how to use ssh and UNIX is an important skill if you plan on doing this for a long time. Certainly web-based tools are easier to use, but using the command line is more powerful and often faster.

I believe vB states 'the only reliable method of back up is' then they give instructions on how to use mysqldump. Without ssh access how are you using mysqldump? cron only?

Our old host allowed it by request. My new host (VPS) allows it all the time. :)

Ours do, and I've used it multiple times. There's a video game player statistics tracking tool that uses Perl, and there's really no good way to edit configs or start the daemon except using the command line. And then there's the stupid "We support PHP5, but you've gotta set it up yourself" bit. It was my first time doing something like that, and let me tell you, it was not fun for me.

BTW, if you've used Linux before, that's basically what SSH is. A command line to your Linux machine, except it's a remote machine instead of a local machine. Very useful in some situations.

Well we're on a dedicated server so yes. We use it to manage the server and install services (such as Shoutcast).
