I'm sure I am already following many of you, but It'd be neat to get all of our Twitter accounts shared in a single thread. :)

Nick (MarinerNick) on Twitter is both my personal account and the one used for AA. :D

I don't twitter (or use facebook) but do appreciate it's something that appeals to many people, including my users.

And it's great for marketing and advertising. Everytime I Tweet one of the posts or threads here, about 20 guests come flooding in right to that thread - and I only have 60 followers so far. 20 people out of 60 followers is about 33% which is not bad at all. Then you add in all of the reTweets and such.
    See this thread: http://www.adminaddict.com/forum/f21/power-networking-388/

If a lot of your users use it, I'd recommend trying it out. It's a great way to connect with them and essentially promote your forum in an almost viral way.

I may try that for my gaming site - as they're prob the most tech savvy.

Does it bring in 'new' users? Do you have to use your real name on Twitter or can I use my site name?

You can surely use your site name; you don't need your real name at all.

So far it hasn't yielded any registrations, but this forum isn't exactly the most active one on the internet (yet :p) - so they may simply be turned away due to on the inactivity.

Can you use our forums RSS feeds to automatically post new threads on twitter? That might be useful, lol.

Yes, you can. I use twitterfeed.com : feed your blog to twitter - post RSS to twitter automatically. You can choose how often you want it to check the feed for updates and how many of the entries you want posted during each check (maximum of 5).

I use it with this forum and my Twitter account. Works great ;)

I haven't quite caught onto the Twitter trend yet, but I guess there's always a time to start :)

I've never found what's so great about Twitter myself. Or MySpace and Facebook for that matter.

Well social networking in general is about making contacts. Its relatively new in the cyberverse but its primarily how business and relationships have been done offline for the last 3 or 4 eons. Its only new in the cyberverse because the current incarnation of the internet is a baby. Less than 20 years old.

By nature, mankind is a tribal but social creature. Modern civilization and overpopulation have all but eliminated a lot of the tribal aspects but they are innate so they are still there if buried. This is why people want to be liked and want to socialize with others. More than that though socializing with others is how business is done. Someone who knows you personally will be more likely to buy 10,000 widgets from your company than one run by someone he doesn't know. Even if the other company's widgets are cheaper.

Offline, this socialization will be obtained by hanging out with friends, going to business brunches with colleagues, association membership, attending seminars, etc... A lot of initial encounters is handled by swapping phone numbers and contact information, either on napkins or business cards.

Online, we have tools like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, etc. Each fulfills a slightly different need in allowing humans to socialize and form tribes or friendships. They fulfill a basic need. At the core they aren't much different than running a forum based community though their presentation is different.

MySpace is like the bar you hang out at on Friday night. You get to meet interesting people occasionally, hear new music, catch up on gossip, tell your friends how your week went and so forth.

Facebook is more formal than that. It can be used for business or pleasure. Or both. More rigid in its interaction, it can be the place where the family spread across the country can share their day, photos and chat easily without having to synchronize schedules. In business, it can used to get information to a lot of people with little effort. You can easily show pictures of new products and get comments in a single location. You can announce special sales to followers, you can find new employees, etc... You can also use Facebook to consolidate all your online activities into a single place. My Facebook is tied to Twitter, Pandora Radio, Hulu, and some other services.

Twitter is all the tidbits of life. It is the office watercooler. Now more happens at the office water cooler than one might think. Not only do you hear the small tidbits of news stories and gossip but promotions and new ideas are born at the water cooler. Business arrangements can be solidified at the water cooler as often as in the conference room. Personally, I find more news in my Twitter account by following CNN, NPR, BBC and the Wall Street Journal than I could ever thing to find in an hour news show. I have people telling me all day about interesting articles that might interest me.

Now personally, I rarely use MySpace but I use Twitter and Facebook every day. I have dedicated applications on my phone and computer for both Twitter and Facebook. Everything I post to Twitter is automatically forwarded to Facebook as well. They both allow me to make new contacts both socially and in business that I can use to better my life.

For me twitter is likely to be more interesting for following others. It could be a central place for updates for any number of websites I follow (including this one.)

And for running down silly rumors ... :spin:

I love the general idea of Twitter - posting short messages updating people (or followers) on what you're doing at that very moment. It can be hilarious. :D
