    Howdy Folks,

I was wondering how many of you reserve your forum's name for instant messaging handles? I once talked about this on another Admin forum and everyone thought it a little nuts was but I thought it was a great branding opportunity.

As part of my new site 'rollout' plan I typically reserve the site's name as a handle on Yahoo, AIM, and MSN additionally I create a MySpace and now Twitter account for the site too.

Admittedly I haven't been that good at leveraging social networking for promotion it's not lack of skills it's lack of time and patience.

For my primary forum I have ourdjtalk as the handle for Yahoo, MSN, and AIM..although I'm not too sure of hte passwords I haven't used them in so long.

    Your thoughts?

    -Dan

I had never thought about this, but I think it's a great idea. Just taking the social networking to another level on a website scale.

I have made a few AIM accounts for my forums using the name of the forum in the past. I never actually used them, though. They were mainly just for show on my profile page (but putting them there without actually making sure I own the screename wouldn't be right).

Yes and no. I have done some but probably need to work on it some more...you never know.

I may be doing that in the future. I don't know how to use AIM but I would imagine I'd see myself registering something like this:

    AdminAddictChris
    AdminAddictJerry
    AdminAddictNick

And do the same for Live with a @Live.com after those.

Edit: Actually, I think you can use domain based emails for those.

I've seen many websites use social networking to their advantage: creating a "Page" on FaceBook, using Twitter for exclusive offers, having a MySpace page, etc.

However, like Dan, I don't have the time or the patience. This would be a job of its own for one person to focus on.

Exactly, like having a dedicated staff member to take care of all that stuff, right?

Yep, just what I was thinking. I wouldn't consider them a full-blown staff member though. Perhaps "Helper" or something of the like.

I always try to, but the only really necessary services I use are Facebook and Twitter. I always make sure to reserve my forum or site name as soon as I purchase the domain. :P

I've done this for a few sites, but not all of them. Really must get cracking on that...
