Many of the top forum softwares now offer ways to have a dynamic frontpage where you can post articles, etc. VBulletin has the community suite, SMF has plugins like TinyPortal, and PHPBB has several. All of these make it so that when people go to your domain homepage, they are not yet at your forum.

How important is this kind of thing for ranking your site on google? It allows you to post targeted articles and the like to keep content for google fresh, but doesn't a forum already do that?

the forum is our front page, we do have the vBulletin CMS as an articles page
I'd say it's personal preference really, unless you're running wordpress or something that is awesome as far as SEO goes.

It is always better to have a home page (front page) with dynamic content. Google spiders love fresh content and it is an advantage of dynamic home pages over static pages.
