Today, my friends and I were talking about credit cards, and the best ones... According to us, the best were Discover and Amex...

In your opinion, which is best; Discover or Amex...

Personally, my top two choices are Visa and MasterCard. So....
    Neither.

I have no loyalty to any particular branding on a card. What I'm interested in are the rewards offered for purchases and a low interest rate. It can have a picture of a half eaten apple on the front and it wouldn't make a difference to me :)

I'm with Arny, it's what they offer and how you use it not to mention what you want out of it. I've closed accounts because how I'm treated and they've been great cards.

AmEX has good customer service and most are willing to help you. While Discover has some great benefits and rewards. I don't like their customer service. But then AmEx has some off brand cards that are great.

Beware of rates and fees. Now that they have to find ways to make money off the cards. My opinion is to stick with visa or mastercard.

For me, Interest Rate, How Widely Accepted it is, and then rewards in that order.

So its usually Visa or Mastercard since I've never found a place that accepts cards without these 2.

For worldwide acceptability you cannot beat Visa.

For member benefits, rewards and perks there is no better card than the American Express card. However the standard American Express card isn't a credit card. It is a revolving charge card. There is a difference.

It goes back to what American Express and Discover charges merchants. Visa is the cheapest on the merchant side. I choose Mastercard, at the moment, because they are helping me with my DisneyWorld vacation and cruise next year. While 3 years ago it was American Express.

Did you know you can call up your credit card company and ask for a lower rate? I've done this successfully a couple of times. Just tell them you have a competing offer and are thinking of switching, or that you plan to make a big purchase soon and are deciding which card to put it on. (Be ready to prove it.)

My folks are Black Card (AmEx) holders. I'm a MasterCard holder. No complaints on my end; I'm quite fond of MasterCard's travel benefits. ;)

Isn't the Black Card like the ULTIMATE credit card? In other words, you could buy a 747 or a van Gogh with it if you so desired?

I wouldn't need that... I would over spend, and never pay anything back!

My mom just got her Plum card in the mail... It's an update from the standard Amex.

Are you seriously asking that question, to somebody you don't even know, and on a public forum?

I am not asking, I am surprised. That's a whole lot of money a year.

Chris, I am not expecting a response, I am just... awe-inspired!

Agreed, we just got a normally $999 ink jet printer and a $500 laser printer completely free from using our AmEx card at work for all purchases.

Most US Vendors take AmEx (at least in our sector or photography related equipment). So thats a good thing

From 1995 through 1998, I worked for a small company that sold software for banks to run their teller, ATM and sales systems. Most of the customers were smaller banks with less than 20 branches. During that time, I would visit up to 10 or 15 customers a month to install software, update it or fix bugs onsite for them. It wasn't unheard of for me to put $20,000-$30,000 on the AMEX in a month.

You see I never knew when I was going to travel more than 24 hours in advance so I always paid full price for an airline ticket. These were at least $1500 or more per round trip at the time. Luckily at that time, TWA always offered you a free upgrade to First Class if there was space available and you paid full price for Business Class. I flew around the country in style. Add in hotel rooms, a $50 per diem for food, rental cars, parking, etc... it goes up fast.

Luckily, I didn't have to write the check to pay for the AMEX bill at the end of the month.
