COPPA - Do you comply?

For those of us who maintain sites that may potentially attract American users under the age of 13, do you all comply with COPPA? Do you follow the process or do you simply deny 13-year-old users?

 

G rated content. But that content is interesting to all ages, we have ages 8 - 90yo.

I've turned coppa off.

 

Indeed, I've always complied with COPPA standards. While I find it to be a bit of a hassle, it's quite important.

 

Even though it's G-rated content, you must still comply. This entails obtaining and maintaining proper documentation (parental approval) for each user under the age of 13.

 

I comply and have a folder full of permission slips; my forum does indeed attract some minors. And many adult members get their kids involved too.

 

I comply and I have people register to confirm they are 13 years of age or older on Pisoga. Anime contains pretty hard graphical scenes...

 

I've always let anyone join in the past (not that I promote it - I just don't use the required age field). To be honest, I don't really care. For 18+ content, however, I would probably make that private from public viewing and only allow, well, 18 or older people to view that section.

Edit: Maybe I shouldn't have stated that I don't really care about it, in public. :p

 

I deny registration for those under 13. For those who enter false birthdate information and admit they're underage, I provide them with a form (online) for their parents to fill out. If that's forged, well, I consider that on them. I think doing that should be enough to comply with this law.

 

I would think so too, but if you don't have proper documentation, you must deny them access to your site.

 

I don't comply - no.

I don't think we have any users under 13.

 

Obviously, my forum attracts many younger people, as it is about a game that is available to people of all ages. As a result, to register, you must provide your date of birth, and it denies registration to anyone who isn't 13 or older. If they fake their age, that's their business, not mine - I've done all I can do.

 

That's what I'm saying. I deny registration if they put in their correct age. So if they lie to bypass that, I don't think that should be on me. They knowingly put in false information.

 

My site doesn't fit under the requirements of those required to comply with COPPA. It is neither targeted to children under 13 nor would it be a major draw to children under 13. One reason why you will never see an Arcade addon on it. That would probably indicate a draw to children under 13.

 

The onus is a reasonable expectation that the information collected was provided in good faith and is factual. Put a checkbox stating "I certify that I am 13 years old or older." If they check that and their parents throw a fit, than delete the account. If the parents pursue, then you can countersue with purgery charges.

 

Kids often already know they might get denied registration if they tell the truth about their ages, so they often lie on the registration screen. Then they try to fit into the community of kids and get caught in the lie, at which point I swoop in and tell them I'm legally obligated to lock their account unless I receive the permission slip.

(Of course, this method is completely insecure and easily circumvented, but I keep my file of permission slips just in case anything hits the fan in the future.)

 

I comply, have plenty of folders for permission from parents. I try to keep my forum G rated anyways but still comply for legal reasons, if the kid truely is smart he will enter false details, I know thats what I did when i was on forums between ages 9-13, i said i was born like 78 or something lol.

 

I just disable so people under 13 can't register the forum however I do not have any cookie or anything so they can easily just register again with different age and that I do not really care about unless they tell me they under 13.

 

So those of you that don't comply, you have a place on your registration form where it is required to enter the birth day?

 

I have the birthday turned off on the registration form. Want to make registering as simple as possible.

 

So how do you crack those under 13 years old?
