I've replied to a 'who's the worst host' thread and thought I'd creat a more positive version that perhaps could even be just as useful.

Please big-up your host, server management firm, web designer, aunt, or whoever it may be that helped youa nd your website / forum behing the scenes.

First up: www.unitedhosting.co.uk; a superb host for more than 7 years (maybe even more than that actually) and I've climbed from shared hosting to reseller to dedicated server to dedicated servers and then dedi's in London Docklands on Teir 1. Definately THE place to host in the UK, serving the UK with your websites. UH have provided support at any time day or night, their packages are fair priced, and there's a real personal feel about the whole place. They host more than 20,000 sites and I'd recommend them to anybody.

[Edit] And Dave, the ONLY other Admin I have on all my forums should perhaps get a mention here; but I'd not recommend him to you, I'd much rather keep him with our forums. :) lol

You should reply with your big-up's now.

Eukhost for offering a custom package, if you ever go with them make sure you speak to a salesperson and work something out that meets your needs and theirs. :)

    WiredTree, of course. :)

I have two dedicated machines with them and cannot say enough about their superb customer support and wonderfully reliable network. Each one of my dedicated servers was setup within 15 hours of their purchase and I was up and running immediately after.

I also happen to have a VPS with them. While I'm more attracted to my dedicated machines, this server is also equally as fantastic.

Wow, Chris. You've got a lot of server space it seems!

For shared hosting I've been pleased with:
InsiderHosting - Though it's been a while since I've used them. Last time I looked their forums seemed to have been spammed by cell phone bots.
Site5 - They sometimes get a bad rap. But while I used them they were always good to me. Support was good. And nice packages. I moved because of a need for a VPS.
HawkHost - Fast server, fast support, nice to deal with.

And I used ServINT for my VPS. Great communication and support, though it was hardly ever needed.

Indeed. I could host the entire planet, particularly with my latest purchase. :D

I've heard mixed reviews about Site5. One thing that bothers me is the lack of complete root access to your server when purchasing a machine that's managed. Sure - you don't have to worry about the technical side of things, but if you're purchasing a dedicated server, you'll want to have complete control over your environment.

I've not been a Site5 customer for a while. But when I was starting up a new project I did strongly consider them. Almost pulled the trigger on them. But I had heard of the bad pub they'd gotten. But BenATsite5 had just taken over and seemed to be starting some serious renovation to how things were set up and run. Especially in the support areas. But I went a different direction (not because of any major concerns with Site5) so I still have no recent 1st hand experience. But I did contact Ben a few times and had some good presale conversations with him. I didn't know about the lack of root access though.

They don't look too bad as a provider, however - as mentioned, the lack of root access with dedicated server purchases is a bit disappointing. Take a look at this page (scroll down to the bottom). They offer a variety of managed services and, because of this, feel that root access is not necessary.

If you're purchasing a hardware server, complete root access should always be a given - managed or not.

It sounds as if they're taking the term 'managed' to the maximum (i.e. by allowing no root access). Oh well, having that level of access and control is not for everyone. ;)
